Warning: cursing, some fighting

Entering the Midsummers venue, you looked around at the sparkling LED lights that had been hung up.

You hated social gatherings, the very thought of one made you want to throw up and it didn't help your social anxiety, but Kie had invited you as her plus one and for some inexplicable reason, you agreed to go.

You smoothed your dress even though you didn't need to and took a deep breathe.

Even as stimulating as the conversation was with Kie and many of her wealthier family friends, you couldn't help but be distracted by a certain someone.

You watched JJ discreetly weaving between guests for a moment before excusing yourself and sliding next to him.

"So, what's the plan?" You asked, walking up to him, eyeing everyone suspiciously to play along with his 'secret-spy' act, but JJ didn't respond, too busy being caught up in your appearance.

Caught off guard by the silence, you look up him, standing up straight when you see his eyes running down your person.

"Don't I look stunning tonight?" You teased, doing a little 360 degree turn to showcase the dress that took you too long to afford.

JJ scoffed (a little too dramatically, if you ask me), cheeks dusted with pink. "Yeah, right," he responded, looking away. You forced a smile, knowing a laugh was pushing it. He was joking—probably—but it didn't stop it from hurting.

"We're back in the G-game," he whispered, glancing around the room as if he hadn't just knocked your confidence down quite a few pegs. "Do you know where Sarah is?"

You scanned around, spotting the girl dancing with Wheezie. You pointed her out and JJ left hastily, patting your back as a sign of thanks. You pressed your lips in a tight smile as he moved through crowds.

You weaved around people yourself, stopping to grab a drink of whatever alcohol was being served.

The waiter didn't bat an eye at you as you took a glass of his tray with urgency, knocking back a large sip.

You cringed at the strong, bitter taste and discreetly spit it back in the cup, feeling a hand tap your back. You turned to see Topper and you groaned internally at the sight of him.

"Yes, what is it?" You sighed with a sort of impatience you saved for people like him.

"Why was JJ talking to my girlfriend? Did he tell you?" Topper asked quickly and you rolled your eyes at his possessiveness.

You ran your finger around the rim of your glass. "Sounds like something you should ask your girlfriend," you said, slowly taking a sip from your drink to add to your point, hoping Topper wouldn't notice the look of disgust you were trying hard to disguise.

He inhaled sharply and you added a quick, "Sorry, but I can't help you," once again excusing yourself.

You placed your drink down on a table, wanting nothing more to do with it and make your way to the bathroom, but your short moment of relief was interrupted by Kelce, and behind him, Rafe.

"Hey, [y/n]," Rafe smiled with a fake sweetness and you mumbled a short 'Hi ', but the boys blocked your path to the door.

Fists clenching, you said lowly, "Could you please move?"

"Relax, we wanted to talk to you because we're worried for you," Rafe said, completely ignoring your original requests and you furrow your brows in confusion. "You haven't been in the Outer Banks very long, right. How long has it been since you moved--not even two months, yeah? We just don't want you falling in with the wrong crowd, would we?"
