The past few days had been a whole range of emotions and it seemed to be a cycle that just kept on going.
First you cried, as any person would, then you got mad at yourself for crying as technically JJ had never actually cheated. So then why did this hurt so much?
You didn't want to lose JJ, but you didn't see this as just his fault. You'd shut him down when he was trying to talk to you at the beach, but only because you hadn't been able to handle it right then and there.
You'd thought it okay to have time to cool off before talking, but you guys hadn't talked since then.
JJ had been staying with you a few nights a week (your parents were oblivious to this), but after that night he hadn't bothered to show up.
"This is stupid," you muttered to yourself, another mood swings coming in as you angrily threw a shirt across the room, only to pick it back up sweetly.
"Where are you going?" Your mother asks you curiously as she sees you slip on your shoes without untying them.
"No idea," you reply and let yourself out without a second glance. You walk far out along the neighbourhood boardwalk where you and JJ had found old huts.
Climbing on top of one roof, you sit to watch nothing in particular, thoughts swirling around like the rushing water in front of you.
JJ had promised you what happened between him and Kie wasn't a big deal, but why had it been so hard for him to explain, then?
You wanted to slap the jealousy you felt. It was such an ugly emotion, you thought.
Soft footsteps echoed from below and you looked down to see Kie with a gentle smile. You helped her up with little effort, offering her a small "hey".
"I haven't seen you in a couple days," she started off, leaning back on her hands.
"Yeah, I've just been... doing nothing, really," you laughed softly.
"JJ misses you." Your smile dropped a little, looking down at your lap.
"Why isn't this coming from him?" You asked.
"Cause he's an idiot," Kie scoffed and you chuckled airily. "Nothing happened between us the other night, if that was what you were wondering."
"I believe you," you reply. "I know you wouldn't do anything to hurt me on purpose."
Kie looked at you earnestly and took your hands into hers.
"I'm really sorry about what happened," she whispered and your eyes widened from the sincere apology.
"It wasn't your fault," you comfort. "It's just one of those things that don't make sense."
Kie's eyebrows raise at your words, encouraging you to continue.
"JJ and I weren't even dating when it happened," you sighed. "I honestly don't know if I even have a valid reason to be upset."
"Don't invalidate your feelings, y/n," Kie said seriously. "It's okay to be upset, I would be upset too."
"I think I just need to talk it out with JJ."
Your hands drop out of Kie's, but the tension that was in the air was now gone.
"So... we're good?" She asks and you nod happily.
"Definitely."
You hop off the roof with care and look up at Kie.
"Now, I have someone I need to go find."
A sudden nervousness passes through you as you walk back towards your own neighbourhood.
You grow more irritated as the minutes quickly past by. Unable to find JJ, you decide to head back home, the sun setting rather fast now.
"JJ?" You call, seeing a tall blonde standing at your front door. He turns around and your eyes connect with his sad, blue ones.
"Y/n," he breathes out and you walk over to him questionably. You assumed he was here to see you. The nervous feeling had suddenly returned and you weren't too fond of it.
"What, um, what're you doing here?" You ask stupidly, looking around for any family members.
"I'm here to talk to you," JJ replies and you rubs your hands on your shorts, praying the air will cool the sweat off a little.
"I'm sorry I haven't found you earlier," you quickly apologize. "I was just all over the place and I wasn't sure how to feel."
"You don't- you don't need to apologize," he sighs, looking at his shoes regrettably. "I was the one that kissed Kie and then I tried to cover it up."
You looked around uncomfortably, not knowing what to say. It didn't feel right to just get back with JJ.
"I'm not ready to lose you," he spoke softly.
"This is so silly," you laugh, but there's tears apparent on your face.
"What's wrong?" JJ asks hurriedly, stepping closer, but he's still unsure whether or not to touch you.
You let out a shaky breath, "I guess I was just afraid of losing you and... I blew things out of proportion because I thought pushing you away over this was easier than losing you eventually and having my feelings hurt."
This confession takes JJ by surprise—not only because it's so much more complicated than once thought, but because you honestly assumed he would leave you one day.
"You don't have to worry about that," he murmurs, looking at you intensely. "I don't want you to push me away—I want to be with you."
Finally deciding it was okay, he wraps his arms around you and your response is muffled, but he can hear you just fine.
"This has been the worst two days," you chuckle, still sniffling.
"I know," JJ says softly. "But I'm here now."
