Prom rolled around again and I was just super tired. I could care less how I looked or whether I was wearing a boring suit. I picked up the finished assignment notes and went into Delilah's room. I laid the papers on top of her overdue assignments. This ought to help her.
'Thought I'd help, you seemed stressed lately - A.'
I left a note and walked downstairs to join the others. Delilah hurried back up the stairs and came back downstairs with two expensive looking tiaras. She placed one on top of Andrea's head and she looked happy. It was much nicer these past months. She was gentler, less abrasive and generally she seemed to be more and more motherly.
Delilah raised her own hands to put her tiara on but I stopped her. I took it from her and I carefully placed it onto her head, making sure it was behind her braid snugly. I let my hand trail down and it grazed her cheek. She seemed a little star struck. I could tell there was something stirring within me. Was I beginning to like her? "Get a room you two," Søren joked.
He led Andrea outside towards the car. I coughed to cover up the awkwardness. I didn't want to encourage Delilah. She's been really persistent on being in a relationship with me. I can't do it. I just don't like her that way. I offered up my hand for her to hold. We really need to get going otherwise we're going to be late. Driving to the prom was easy. There was hardly any traffic and I was surprised yet again by how extravagant the decorations were. They really went all out for this years prom and it wasn't even the last one.
Getting out the car, I walked round to the passenger side of the car and opened the door. I offered my hand to Delilah again and awaited for her to put hers in mine. I felt her place her hand in mine and then she slipped as she stepped down from the car. I caught her and pulled her against me. I couldn't risk any harm coming to the baby. "Are you okay?" I asked her. She seemed dazed again.
She pulled herself up straight again and put her hand in the crook of my arm. I led her towards the dance and I was amazed at the inside. It looked so different. I didn't understand how they could pull this off all the time. I put a protective arm around Delilah. There were so many people looking at us with a sneer or with clear disappointment. I caught eyes with Emma. She looked stunning.
"Go, see your friends, they're waiting for you," I said to Delilah. I pushed her lightly towards her friends and I scanned for mine in the crowd. I saw Andrea standing on a chair and waving for me to come over. I squeezed my way through the crowd of students and came face to face with my two best friends.
"What are you going to do after your last year here?" Andrea asked. She was always the one to initiate conversation. Søren was also the one that sometimes initiated conversations but I realised that I rarely did. Everyone always talked at me rather than with me and I just answered them. I really don't know how to talk to people.
"I'm going to go home to Denmark for a bit and then go travelling. I'll even come and stay in Norway for a while." he spoke softly while deep in thought. It was only natural that Søren went to visit Andrea considering they're going to be in a long distance relationship. "I'm going to go home to Norway and take a gap year or two to figure out what I want to do." said Andrea.
They looked so happy and they knew what they was going to do. Am I going to be able to go home? Would Delilah be willing to move to Australia with me? Do I have to stay here? "What are you going to do Addy? I mean with all the commotion about the baby," Andrea asked. The little pet name she gave me just made me feel all the more homesick. I want to go home. "I don't know. We'll see what Delilah wants. If she wants me to stay here, I'll stay here." I responded.
Andrea rubbed my arm with a sympathetic smile. "Go dance, have fun," I said and gestured towards the other dancing couples. I needed a minute alone. As if reading my mind, Søren nodded and stood from his chair. "We should give Adrian a minute to himself. He's stressed out and the best thing we can do right now if be there when he needs us." he spoke with a soft smile. Everyone's smiling at me but when I smile back it feels forced.
