We walked through the front door and heard muttering from the other room. I paid no mind to it. It's not my business and I just wanted to and eat. I was hungry and tired. As soon as I saw Anders towering above Delilah, his suitcases behind him, I felt sad. Was he leaving? He still had a year left at school.
"Why?" asked Andrea. The sorrow in her voice threatened to break and spill frown her eyes. Anders pulled her into a hug. "I miss our family and the homeland," he cooed softly. Anders stroked Andrea's hair in an attempt to soothe her. I heard her sobs, muffled by her brother's chest.
Andi pushed away from his hug, her tears still flowing down her cheeks. "I thought you planned on University here too?" she questioned him. I thought that too. Was he lying or did he actually want to go home because he missed his home. I couldn't tell. "Father told me I got accepted into the University of Bergen," he spoke calmly. Was it rehearsed.
We watched as he picked up some papers from the table. "I'll be managing the house from back home, so will our older brothers. Just until you're 18 and then you'll have full control over what happens." Anders spoke solemnly. Anders picked up his suitcases and started to walk out of the house. We followed him outside ready to say our goodbyes.
Anders pulled me into a hug and ruffled my hair. "You look after her. Both you and Søren you hear?" he said jokingly. I nodded. Andrea smiled and hugged Søren to keep her from crying again. He did the same to Søren before lowering his voice so only we could hear him. "I mean it. I don't trust her around Delilah. I feel like she's up to something," he murmured. He took a glance at Andrea and then towards the house.
I walked inside the house to go and make dinner. Maybe I should go and check if Delilah's hungry. Someone's gotta feed the bitch before she get's butt hurt over no one making her food. I climbed up the stairs and stood outside of her room. Her door was decorated like the rest of ours. A personalised colour door. Her choice was an obnoxious red.
Hesitantly, I knocked on the door. "Come in!" called out Delilah. It was certainly less than pleasant. I opened the door and walked inside. It was what I expected from her. Posh, rich kid decorum throughout the entire room. "Oh, it's just you," she sneered. She's already grumpy.
My mood turned sour the longer I stood in her room full of her obnoxiously overpriced stuff. "Do you want to starve or shall I make you dinner too?" I asked. I hoped my tone didn't come across as too bitter. I heard her take a deep breath and sigh. I could tell I was already pissing her off. "Maybe if you weren't so intolerable, I would've said something to you earlier. Make me food," she remarked.
I looked around her room one last time and my eyes fell upon a cork board hanging on her wall. My sister used to have one to help her when Dad left. I looked back at Delilah. Her brow was furrowed and she bit her lip in what I presumed was frustration. Did I annoy her that much? "If you're using the cork board. My sister used to make hers a mood board," I muttered. Why am I telling her this?
I turned on my heel and left her room. God she's so annoying. I walked downstairs and started on dinner. "Something smells nice," Andrea spoke walking into the kitchen. I hummed in response still keeping an eye on the rice. I took a spoon and scooped some of the food up. "Have a try," I mused handing her the spoon. She took it and blew before taking a bite. I heard her humm in satisfaction.
"Really good dinner tonight," she mused before walking away to go talk to Søren or to do homework. I got the plates out and dished up the food. I realised I had gotten out 5 plates instead of four. I'm going to have to get used to the fact that Anders is not going to be around anymore.
Carefully I set the plates down on the side and dished up the food. "Dinner!" I called bringing two of the plates through. I set them down on the dinner table and went back to get the other ones. It was weird eating dinner. None of us really talked about Anders leaving or what people were going to talk to about tomorrow. "Thanks for the dinner Adrian," Søren thanked me before leaving for his room. Andrea was next and Delilah was still sitting at the table.
I went to my room and started on another letter to my Mum. I wrote about what happened so far in the past few months. It was a lot just to think about. In truth I was still terrified that my Dad was still harassing her for money that she didn't owe him. In fact that he owed her money because he doesn't pay child support. I put the pen down and tried to focus on my surroundings. I'm not there to protect them and I hated to think what would happen to them.
I ended up staying up late just thinking about how everything's so weird.
