I was in shock still. I can't believe after all this time, Nat's brother worked with Søren. It really was just a bizarre connection. "You were looking for me?" Nat's brother remarked. He seemed honestly surprised. He had come over ahead of the wedding with Andrea and Søren.
"Yeah, I thought you might actually want to see your sister getting married." I responded.
Sam's eyes widened. "She's getting married. Nat?" he was beside himself with confusion. It's evident how many years he went off to find their other siblings and Mother. "Yes Sam, that's why I wanted to get in contact with you. Over the years she's thought a lot about you and where you were going to be. She's thought about you coming home a lot." I explained. He took a deep breath, running his fingers through his hair.
"This is a lot to take in. Australia doesn't even feel like home anymore." he admitted. The thought seemed to come out without warning, I understood though, the way Australia didn't feel quite right when coming back but I guess I never really thought of anywhere else as home.
Sam sloped down in the chair, paling in complexion on the realisation of how much he's missed. Andrea and Søren exchanged worried glances. They didn't know the full story but I'm pretty sure they could put two and two together. He at least knew that the wedding wasn't that far away. "Do you know what happened to your other siblings?" I asked. Sam shook his head.
"It was a wild goose chase... I don't know where Mum took them so instead I found myself travelling to try and find myself again. It was hard not knowing anyone and not knowing who to turn to.I was scared of going back home. I was scared of Dad telling me that it was useless and to just accept that Mum and the siblings were gone." He spoke solemnly looking down at his knees. It was heartbreaking to hear.
I know I was upset when Nat told me the truth. When we first went on dates she mentioned her Mum and Dad were going through a bad divorce. Truth was her Mum just picked up and left with the other siblings. The divorce papers came through about a month after she left.
"Thank you for looking after my sister," he murmured looking up at me with the most forlorn look I've ever seen. I smiled and patted him on the shoulder. "It's fine Sam. What you can do for her right now, is to be there for her at the wedding. You can hide yourself at the back so she doesn't see you and maybe try and talk to her at the reception." I suggested a course of action that I thought would be best.
Sam nodded. "Now that we've got all the doom and gloom out, why don't we have a little drink." Søren proposed, hands already holding out cold, crisp bottles of cider. I nodded taking one for myself. These past months were killing me. There was overtime needed to be done at the garage, Nat always looks like she's about to pop, Naomi's birthday is coming up and even though Jess has taken most of the load, there's still a lot to do in terms of wedding planning.
I checked my calendar. I completely forgot, we've got cake testing later this week and then Nat's got the last dress alteration. We've still got to find a florist to work with, gotta find a suit. There just seems to be less and less time. "You alright Adrian?" asked Andrea. Her brows were knitted together in concern.
"Yeah, just a lot of stuff to do," I brushed off her concern. I didn't need my guests to be worrying right now. Even if they are my closest friends, I need them to be relaxed. I took a swig of the cider. "Anything else you want to know Sam?" I asked. He paused to think for a moment. Then the questions started. I was happy to answer my future brother in law. He was ecstatic to learn about Naomi and all the things that Nat and I did.
By the end of the night I got to know him a lot better than I thought I would.
