"Kendra!" My mom yelled, flicking up the light switch. I opened my eyes and moaned, letting her know that I was awake. "I told you to set your alarm clock!"
It took all of my will power to sit up and get out from under the soft mountain of blankets that were draped over me as I lay on my bed. I glanced over at my alarm clock that read 6:20, then over to my mom who was waiting impatiently for a response.
"Sorry, guess it slipped my mind," I replied in a flustered tone as I quickly made my way to my closet. I had 10 minutes to get ready for school, and I didn't plan on spending them chatting with my mom. I heard a groan escape her lips and the sound of footsteps, signalling her retreat.
After quickly picking out an outfit that was cute enough, I scurried to the bathroom to apply my makeup. When I was satisfied, I looked at my phone. "Three minutes to spare." I muttered, smiling to myself. "New record."
I grabbed an apple from the fridge, chucked my backpack over my shoulders, and picked up my combat boots. I hopped into the car, buckling my seat belt before my mom sped off like a NASCAR driver. As I laced up my boots, my mom began to rant.
"Did you study for your AP Bio test today? You know you need to get good grades if you want to get into a good college. I won't have any failures in this family. Hey! No feet on the seats."
This was the usual. I rolled my eyes and nodded along, pretending like I was actually paying attention to her. As we came up to the front entrance of my school, I grabbed my stuff and got out of the car, muttering a few obscenities.
I took a big first bite out of my apple while walking to my locker. I was glad that mine was near the back of the school. It meant that the hallways were always less crowded during passing periods and there was always a few empty lockers between me and other students.
I narrowed my gaze as I approached my locker today. There was a short kid, most likely a freshman, sitting in front of locker 758, the locker right next to mine. I realized that I had never seen him before, but decided against initiating awkward small talk with the new kid.
As I knelt down to put some books on my locker shelf, i noticed the kid glance at me. Finally, he spoke up and said, "Hi, uh, would you mind telling me where room 306 is?"
I turned and smiled at him. He was kind of cute in a little brother sorta way. "That's Ms. Ambrose's room. I have her for first block tutorial too," I said glancing down at his schedule. "My name's Kendra."
"Sam," He replied, reaching out his hand. I shook it and smiled at him.
"It's almost 7:30," I stated, looking down at my watch. "You want to head to class?"
He nodded and we took off. I spent most of the class talking to him about our school and also learning some stuff about him, like how his dad is a mechanic and they drift around a lot. Sam turned out to be a really funny kid, and he also helped me study for the AP Bio test I had next block.
When class ended, I pointed Sam in the direction of his next class and we went our separate ways. I mentally groaned as I walked down the main hallway and turned my cheek as I passed by Darren Young and his steroid jacked, catcalling friends. The test was easy enough, but I still came out a little mentally tired.
The rest of the day was smooth sailing with English and Art as my last two subjects. I did manage to get an earful at lunch from my friends who had witnessed "The presence of a senior who could only be described as God-like" in their math class. This made me burst out laughing.
At the end of the day I headed back to my locker. I was a little bit disappointed when Sam didn't show up. I had been hoping we could talk about his first day on the way out to the front of the school. I shrugged off his absence and headed out anyways.
