CHAPTER 46

Edaline and Grady sat on a bench in the safe room, with Lex sitting on their laps. They tried their best to stay calm, for the sake of Lex, however, seeing their daughter pace in front of them, clearly stressed, made them worry. They had seen her and the Prince's little scene; they had known that the two of them were close, just not... That close.

It broke Edaline's heart to see Sophie finally find someone she loves, then having to watch them go into battle: for her. Edaline had had battles with love herself back in the days, and she dreaded the fact that Sophie might go through the same things too, some even worse.

As a mother, she wanted to protect her daughter from everything. She and her husband had done a wonderful job in the past 13 years (well, except for a few school boys that asked Sophie for a peck on the lips, only to be chased away by a furious Grady), but the last few weeks have been hard. Attacks on the village, being separated, the kidnapping of Bex and Rex... Sophie had been going through so much. Edaline wanted nothing but to take all the pain away.

When Grady had seen Sophie and Fitz's scene, he saw red. Why was that boy, who he barely knew anything about, touching his daughter? Who cares if he was the freaking prince; he was touching his daughter!

But then Grady saw the emotion in their eyes. The caring. The fear of losing each other. Fitz was willing enough to go out in battle, risk his life, for the girl he loved. Grady felt his heart warm slightly; maybe, just maybe, Fitz wouldn't break her heart. Even so, Grady wasn't completely convinced.

He watched Fitz walk out of the doors, as he disappeared from view. Grady had walked up to his daughter, wrapped his arms around her, pulling her in for a hug. She had sobbed into his shoulder, gripping to him like he was oxygen.

"I don't want him to go," Sophie had whispered, her grip getting stronger. "I really, really don't want him to go."

His heart broke. Maybe Sophie didn't realize it, but this wasn't just a school girl crush: it was pure love.

He had seen the looks of yearning in the young couple's eyes. Like they couldn't live without each other, needed to breathe the same air... He had felt the same thing at their age, and still did to this day, with the woman of his dreams. He couldn't take that away from Sophie.

Grady had squeezed his daughter tightly, and silently whispered his blessing. Fitz was good enough for his little girl.

So this chapter was slightly shorter, and from a different point of view. I thought that I'd switch it up a bit, since Grady and Edaline are one of my favourite characters in kotlc, but they haven't really shown up as much as I'd like in my book. I hope that you liked it:)
