"Toni."
"Not now, I need to read the clocks for the parrots."
"Toni, your- what? Parrots?"
"They want the island, but it's not time yet. I need to put the blue flowers in the stew."
It makes perfect sense. Why doesn't he understand? I need to inspect the island before the parrots get here. It's common practice.
And no one wants to move in without fresh stew. I just can't believe they came a day early!
"Toni, wake up!"
Someone shakes my shoulder and my eyes pop open, the light of my room making me flinch.
Whatever I was dreaming about fades away and I notice Maverick standing next to my bed. I furrow my eyebrows, trying to recall whatever task I was trying to complete in my dreamland, but I come up empty. Mav looks a combination of confused and amused and I realize I probably said something incredibly stupid while I was waking up. I think I remember something about birds?
Instead of dwelling on it, I swing my legs over the side of the bed and smile up at him.
"Good morning," I chirp, lifting my head in hopes that he'll lean down and smooch me - he looks like he wants to. He doesn't, though, and instead glances to his right awkwardly. I look over, assuming I missed someone else's presence. I can understand if he doesn't want to kiss me in front of someone.
I don't see anyone, though, which makes me turn back to him curiously. I try not to feel hurt that he has hardly touched me so far this morning. Did something happen?
He still hasn't said anything to me, and it's worrying me a little. He glances back to his right, as if looking at someone. He nods once, a small smile playing on his face, before he closes his eyes and turns his head back to me.
He opens his eyes and softly says, "Good morning, Toni."
Only, it's not his voice.
It's Cyrena's.
Tears instantly prick my eyes and I glance over to where Maverick kept looking a minute ago and it suddenly clicks. She's really here. And he can let her talk through him? I thought she could only talk to him.
"Don't cry, dear," she says softly, wiping a stray tear from my cheek. I look into Maverick's eyes, but see Cyrena's love and it makes me want to laugh hysterically.
This is so fucking weird.
"I miss you," I choke out. "So much." She only nods, shushing me quietly. I don't stop crying, though. "So much has happened!" I exclaim. "I met my mate, but I'm sure you know that. I found out my father is alive."
"I know that, too," she tells me. "Are you going to go look for him?"
"I think so," I respond.
