"Come on y/n! We don't have all day." Natasha shouted over her shoulder, walking away as you lifted yourself from your seat on the sofa and headed towards the meeting room."I'm coming, chill out." You huffed in return, reluctantly following the assassin.
Dragging your feet along the floor, morning coffee in your right hand and using the left one to flip off Natasha behind her back, you arrived at the meeting room, lowering your finger before she could see it. She opened the door not bothering to hold it open for you as it swung back and hit you in the arm, making you spill your coffee.
"What the hell Romanoff?" You shot sharply, wiping down your shirt.
Just as she opened her mouth to speak Tony stepped in. "Ladies, save the bickering for later, please. We have more important matters to attend to right now."
You rolled your eyes and clenched your jaw in return, stopping yourself from replying and proceeding to sit down next to your best friend Wanda, who was currently beside herself due to the recent incident in Lagos. You smiled at her softly and put a hand on her shoulder as a sign of comfort, getting a small smile in return. When suddenly the door to the meeting room bolted open, everyone's heads turned in unison, your eyes landing on Secretary Ross.
"Five years ago I had a heart attack." He began, "Right in the middle of my bathroom, it turned out it was the best round of my life because after 13 hours of surgery and a triple-bypass I found something 40 years in the army never taught me. Perspective."
"Excuse me sir but what does this have to do with us?" You couldn't help but grow impatient, which caused you to gain several looks of annoyance.
"If you'd let me finish then maybe I'd get to the point." He bit back sharply. Feeling the same amount of dislike towards you as you felt towards him. "The world owes the Avengers an un-payable debt. You have fought for us, protected us, risked your lives, but while a great many people see you as heroes. Some prefer the word vigilantes."
"And what word would you use, Mr. secretary?" Natasha asked smugly, fed up with hearing the man's nonsense.
"How about dangerous? What would you call a group of US-based enhanced individuals who routinely ignore sovereign borders and inflict their will wherever they choose and who frankly seem unconcerned about what they leave behind."
Wanda dropped her head, suddenly finding the floor more interesting. You put your hand on her knee and tried your best to show that you were there for her.
"New York." Ross' voice rose again as he began to play a clip, one of which showed the events that took place in the battle of New York against Loki several years ago. Buildings were being destroyed by hulk as he came crashing down to the ground floor. "Washington DC." The fight between Nat, Steve and the winter soldier, which caused multiple car crashes, destructions of buildings and the avengers Jet blowing up, landing in the lake. "Sokovia" He progressed on and on through the clips, showing more destruction each time. Until finally he got to Lagos. Showing everyone the destruction caused by Wanda as she frantically tried to clear the explosion.
"That's enough." You decided to speak up. "You've made your point"
Ross ignored you, letting the video carry on playing. This time Steve spoke up, "She said that's enough."
Turning the monitor off, Ross spoke up again.
"For the past 4 years you've operated with unlimited power and no supervision. That's an arrangement the governments of the world can no longer tolerate. But I think we have a solution." He took a stack of papers out of his colleague's hands, placing it in front of Wanda. "Sokovia accords. Approved by 117 countries. It states the Avengers shall no longer be a private organisation, instead, they'll operate under the supervision of a United Nations panel, only if and when that panel deems it necessary."
As Rhodey passed the accords over to you, you scoffed in disgust at what you were hearing and reading.
"Something you'd like to say y/l/n?" Ross turned to you.
"If I may, secretary." You replied. "Weren't you and your little government playboys planning on nuking New York when Loki started that alien invasion? To which Stark had to get rid of before everyone there died and the whole country was blown up. In case you needed a recap, we were there working our asses off, trying to prevent any further damage being caused by Loki, where as you were trying to cause more harm."
The secretary glared at you in return. knowing you were right. While everyone else smirked at you, including Natasha surprisingly, knowing that you weren't one to lose an argument or let your guard down.
"Yeah, Tony and Bruce created Ultron, I'm not denying that, but that was a mistake. But what were you expecting them to do after that? Not go after him and just leave him to kill hundreds and thousands of civilians? Sokovia was destroyed but we still saved a lot of lives in the progress. Alongside the world."
Ross tried to speak up but you cut him off instantly, making sure you could finish what you needed to say.
"And in Washington, wasn't it you guys that were infiltrated by a Nazi regime and didn't even notice? You're really great at your jobs huh? If it wasn't for Steve, Natasha and Sam, then the hellicarriers would've fired out at people all over the world and eliminated anyone HYDRA deemed a threat. Which could have even included you. And finally, Lagos, where if Wanda hadn't carried out that explosion elsewhere a lot more people would have died than they did. So excuse me if I'm wrong secretary, but I just gave a valid argument for each and every disaster that you're trying to blame us for, proving that you aren't doing this for the safety of the world, but instead because of pity that we get more recognition than you? Am I right in saying so?" You finished, smirking.
"Except I'm not the only one that wants the accords in place. Like I already said 117 countries agreed for this to happen. Meaning I'm not the problem. You are. And nothing you say or do can change my mind. The accords are happening whether you like it or not." He shot back, making your blood boil as you knew that you guys weren't the threat.
"And if we choose not to sign?" You spoke, desperately trying not to leap out of your seat and throw a punch or two at him.
"You retire."
