Bonk! I sit up! Bonk! I look at my clock. It's 4 a.m. I get up and slip to the window. Louis is down below.
"Hey birthday girl! Ready?" Louis asked.
"Give me a second!" I whisper. I shut the window and pull on a pair of hunting boots. I had gone to bed in the hunting camo Louis had given me. I run back to the window. Louis places the ladder against the side of my house and I crawl out. I jump to the ground.
"You look nice." Louis grins. I moan.
"Louis I have bed head and it's four in the morning. Not now!" I say.
"I'm just trying to be nice Miss Ten year old."
"Well if you wanna be nice just tell me where we are going and what we are doing!" he laughs and hands me a gun. An AR15 22.
"Happy Birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear carrot! Happy birthday toooo you!!!" he sings. He had a beautiful voice. I smiled.
"So where are we going shooting?" I ask kicking a rock. I knew two minors with guns wouldn't go down well with the police if we got caught. Louis smiled his mischievous smile.
"Oh I have just the right place."
In just a couple of short minutes we were behind Mrs. Beam's fence aiming at her plum tree.
"So how exactly does this work?" I ask. Louis wraps his arms around me.
"The butt of the gun should fit in your shoulder. Don't place your finger on the trigger until you're ready to fire. Okay so now look through this notch and line it up with circle down here. Then switch off the safety." he helped me get set up.
"When do we fire?" I asked my arm hurting from holding the gun so long.
"When I say go. Place your finger on the trigger now carrot." he said
"Whatever you say pigeon brain."
"3, 2, 1 fire!" he shrieked. The guns went off with a slight pop. Like the sound of a pencil hitting the floor. We jumped the fence and picked up the plums.
"Louis, Mrs. Beam said we couldn't take her plums without her permission!" I whispered. He rolled his eyes.
"Noooooo! She said we couldn't pick her plums without her permission. We didn't pick them. We shot them," he smiled wide. He was always looking to get around rules.
We gathered the plums we shot and pulled the plastic pellets out before placing them in our basket. Judging by the sky it was 6 a.m. When we had gathered enough plums Louis decided we would enjoy our breakfast at our tree. As we walked to the tree Louis and I talked about the upcoming school year even though summer had just started. I would be going into 4th grade and he would be starting middle school.
"Erica?" he asked pausing when we got to the tree.
"Yeah Louis?" I hadn't heard him use my real name in a long time after I got my nickname carrot for eating a carrot once a day. And I hadn't called Louis his real name after receiving the name pigeon brain for chasing a pigeon yelling Kevin at the top of his lungs.
"Don't worry about the next years of school, you'll be fine." I looked at my feet. I had been bullied all my years at school and Louis always stood up for me. I never understood why kids were so mean. So what if my hair was like straw and I wasn't so pretty. Or that I was strange. So what if my daddy worked with Simon Cowell. It didn't mean people had to be mean. I dreaded this school year because it meant no protection, no friend.
"You're beautiful, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!" he smiled. I nodded. Louis started to climb the tree. I handed him the basket and started to climb.
"STOP! NO!" he yelled
"What!?!" I screamed scared he had seen something.
"I have to help you up!"
"Louis I'm ten!"
"But it's a tradition."
"Fine!" I said trying to sound irritated but then broke out giggling. He offered me his hand.
"Louis?" I said when we were settled.
"Yep?" he said with a mouthful of plum.
"What if the kids aren't nice to me though?"
"Don't worry! I will be your SUPERMAN!" he screamed.
What a coincidence. He was wearing a superman shirt. I nodded. He looked at me with his intense eyes. Then kissed me on the cheek. It wasn't a kiss of love. It was a kiss of reassurance.
