teresa reached out and grabbed his hand. "it's going to be okay, thomas."
he leaned against the door and slid his hand out from hers. he could barely even look at her without feeling betrayed. this must've been exactly the way his friends felt when they realized he wasn't going with them into the maze. well now he will be.
"this is what i get for lying to hayley," he whispered to himself then tried to focus. "and for sending my friends to the maze i built. wait... i already know everything. i'm the one who built the maze."
"you won't be any different from the others," teresa said. "your memories will be taken away too... i'm sorry, thomas. if only you had just agreed to help us with the blueprint, maybe janson wouldn't have suggested it. if it was only up to me i would have just sent up hayley and oliver, but everyone agreed with him."
"oliver? i thought aris was the one being sent to group b?" thomas asked.
"well..." she paused. "if all goes well, we might send up another girl and another boy to opposite groups. so maybe hayley won't be the only girl for long, but we haven't figured it all out yet. plans change."
thomas scoffed. he knew more than anyone how plans change. he was apart of a big change happening right now. he stood up straight and began pacing, trying to walk off the sudden shock. "this was janson's idea?" he asked and began pacing faster.
teresa nodded in response.
he felt light-headed and disoriented. his head was buzzing with the idea of entering the maze. then he stopped pacing and remembered hayley on the other side of the door.
"what group am i going to?" he wouldn't have had to ask this question if it was earlier times but now that they were changing the groups he wasn't sure.
"you'll be going to group a with hayley," teresa said. "that way the subjects won't be too overwhelmed if there's also a boy with the girl."
his breathing became normal again and his body calmed down a little after he heard her say that. at least this way, he could protect hayley in the maze. he won't remember her but he'll protect her with his life.
