she's alone in the maze. she knew because walls towered all around her, creating a barrier. she staggered to one side of the wall and leaned against it.

she glanced to her left to find thomas. a huge bulbous creature, appeared to be metal, towered over him. it's ear piercing screams echoed throughout the maze.

she was about to run over to help when she heared another Griever scream coming from her right. at the other end of the corridor, there was another griever. only this one had newt pinned to the ground.

she screamed and tried to run to him but her legs wouldn't let her. she looked down to see that her legs were sinking into the earth.

she can't do anything but watch them both die.

-

her eyelids jerked open and she sat up, breathing hard. feeling shaky and slightly sick to her stomach. it was still night outside, moonlight poured through the bars on the door, illuminating the slammer just enough for her to see.

her back ached from sleeping on the ground and her skin was ice cold. she rubbed her arms in an attempt to warm herself up when she heard newt shuffling from the slammer next to hers.

"bad dream?" he asked, his voice like silk. "want to talk 'bout it?"

"it's too awful to put into words," she answered. "why are you still awake?"

"i have bad dreams too, hayley," he said. he sounded almost sad. "and the hard ground doesn't help."

"you should've apologized," she moved from the floor to the chair. "gally is a jerk but at least you'd be sleeping in a nice hammock in a tree instead of in the slammer."

"i won't apologize," he said in a hard tone. "not now, not ever because that would mean that i think it was okay for him to say those things about you."

"he said i wasn't special, and he's right. i'm not different, me being here is different for you but i'm not different."

"you're special to me," he said so quietly that she almost didn't hear him, and for a few minutes she pretended that she didn't.

she liked him. he was kind and overprotective, and in a place like the glade she needed someone like that but she just didn't know how to be with someone in that way when they're surrounded by horrors. the glade wasn't a place to fall in love.

but she couldn't stop herself from saying, "you're special to me too."
