newt showed up to take her to the spot the builders liked to meet in the mornings. he didn't say anything the whole way there. as they neared the group of boys, she felt queasy but tried not to show it because newt was watching her closely and she didn't want to worry him more than he already was.the majority of the builders all had broad and muscular shoulders, perfectly built for being a builder. it was intimidating. she didn't know how she was going to survive the day with them. she was barely half their size. she stopped walking and turned to newt. "i'll be okay," she said, more to herself than to newt. "it's only one day. i can survive one day. i-i can do this."
newt looked just as sick as she felt. "if anything happens-"
"nothing will," she interrupted. her gut said a different thing.
"let's go, hayley!" gally yelled from the trees. "we don't have all shuck day!"
she jumped at the sound of his voice and had to close her eyes to try and calm her nerves.
newt placed his hand on her cheek, calming her down instantly. she opened her eyes to see him staring at her with worried eyes. she forced a smile and turned away from him before she could talk herself out of going. she had to go, to prove that she wasn't going to let gally push her around.
she reached the group of boys and stood there trying to make herself look more calm and not the frightened girl that most of them saw her as. they stared at her, waiting for her to break down but she didn't.
"alright," gally began. "everyone go easy on the shank. she'll probably end up hurting herself in the first 10 minutes anyway."
the builders laughed, but she noticed one in particular looked more so annoyed than amused at gally teasing her. she didn't get a good enough look at him because the builders began to make their way into the trees.
