"in the end we're left infinitely and utterly alone."☒ ☒ ☒ ☒ ☒ ☒
her mind swirled with blurry images. every time she'd try get a closer look at them, they blur even more and drift away. she could see a boy with brown eyes but the memory evaporated and she was left with nothing.
she felt around with her hands, trying to find out where she was but all she could make out was she was in a box of some type and it rattled beneath her, moving upward. a cage, she thought. it has to be a cage.
"let me out!" she screamed in desperation. she didn't know if anyone was listening but she screamed until her throat got sore. "i didn't do anything! please, let me out!"
she didn't know if that were entirely true. all her memories were gone, so she had no recollection of what happened that led her to the cage. i had to have done something horrible, she thought. why else would i be punished and put in a cage? what did i do?'
the cage rattled and she looked up to see the top of the shaft approaching at an alarming rate. it's too fast! she screamed in her head. we need to slow down.
she looked around the cage, for anything that could help the situation when her eyes landed on a boy. he was asleep on the floor, his arm covering his face.
he must've done something bad too, she thought. he's here so he's being punished too.
she quickly knelt down beside him and uncovered his face. he looked harmless. he was just a boy. it was hard for her to believe that he would do something bad. the cage rattled again and she returned to searching for something useful.
she didn't know if the cage was going to stop when they reached the top. so she had to stop it herself. she picked up a metal pipe when it was the only thing she could think of that could stop the cage.
she looked down at the boy and took a deep breath.
"i'm sorry," her voice shook. "but you're not awake to help me and i'm out of ideas."
she didn't give herself time to change her mind, instantly ramming the metal pipe through the bars. sparks ignited as the metal pipe rubbed against the shaft wall. she screamed and looked away, trying her best to cover her face from the sparks whilst still holding the metal pipe.
the cage groaned and to her surprise, began to slow down.
she looked at the boy, wishing he was awake to witness what was happening and share her excitement but then again, she still didn't know who he was. he could be dangerous. she looked away from him and pushed the metal pipe through the bars again.
there were few sparks this time because the cage wasn't moving as fast as the first time. her arms ached from holding the bar but she persisted.
eventually the cage came to a lurching stop, much smoother than if she didn't use the metal pipe. her arms were on fire now and she couldn't stop herself from falling to the floor in a tired heap.
it was eerily silent.
she didn't know what else to do but lay there beside the unknown boy until somebody came for them. minutes passed, and by then she didn't care if the boy was dangerous, all she wanted was for him to wake up just so she had someone to talk to.
but he didn't.
he laid there unconscious until she got tired of waiting and decided to find out what else was inside the cage with them.
all around them were boxes and crates filled with god knows what. she knew she should look inside and find out but she couldn't pull her attention away from the boy. his clothes were wet and clung to his body. she wondered how he got wet but grabbed a woolen blanket on one of the crates, draping it over his body.
"if you could just wake up now," she sighed. "that would be great because..."
she felt her throat tighten.
"...i'm scared," she said so quietly that she barely heard herself.
he didn't wake up.
she lightly hit her fists on his chest, feeling her body trembling. "wake up!" she was suddenly angry at him, for making her go through this alone. "you got to skip the trip up," she cried. "you don't get to skip the waiting part. wake up!"
that's when she broke down. she fell back against the crates, not caring anymore. her sobs echoing through the elevator shaft. she wrapped her arms around her legs and cried.
this chapter makes me cry.
imagine going through that alone.
