hayley felt a huge weight get lifted off her shoulders knowing she would never have to work with gally again. there was no way she would be assigned to the builders. her first wood piece was cut evenly, but the rest following that were nowhere close to even. alby wouldn't put her somewhere she wasn't good at.great, i'll be a slopper, she thought. she hoped she would be good at at least something but her chances were looking slimmer and slimmer.
to her surprise, gally actually wasn't going around bragging about beating her in the game. he must've not wanted newt to find out because harming another glader was against the rules. she wasn't going to tell on him, because it was partly her fault for stepping into the circle in the first place.
ashton helped her conceal the bruises on her arms by giving her his sweater. she realized it was most likely the sweater he would wear to cover his own scars.
the story he told her about the other gladers beating on him was constantly in her mind but she didn't bring it up again. she could tell ashton was uncomfortable talking about it.
newt was incredibly busy, running around the glade and fixing problems that other gladers created. apparently, one guy pretended he broke his arm and since then refused to do any work. he was a builder, obviously. ashton told her that the builders always slacked off and were constantly getting yelled at by newt.
hayley spent most of her time with ashton. he was becoming her best friend in the glade. he made her laugh by the stories he would tell her. he was mid-way through telling her about 'gally's night on the toilet' when she gagged and threw a strawberry at him. "i'm eating!" she screamed.
ashton laughed and tossed the strawberry into the air and caught it with his mouth effortlessly. "sorry," he shrugged. "thought you would want to hear embarrassing stories about your tormentor."
"i do," she replied guiltlessly. "just not the ones that'll make me sick."
they were laughing when alby came over and spoke directly to her. "your next job will be with the slicers. don't be late. winston doesn't like slackers."
