☒ ☒ ☒ ☒ ☒ ☒they talked to each other through the wall separating them all night long, mostly about unimportant things like how big of a jerk gally is and how soon she'll be able to start trying out the jobs around the glade. she wasn't looking forward to any of them really. she didn't know where she'd best fit in.
the med-jacks bandage up gladers who've been wounded, they're basically the doctors of the glade. it didn't sound like too bad of a job but blood made her queasy.
she couldn't cook, at least she didn't remember how to, so she couldn't work in the kitchens.
the runners interested her but the aspect of the grievers made her blood run cold.
"i'll most likely have to be a slopper," she sighed.
newt said that the sloppers are the ones who aren't good at any of the jobs, so they do the dirty tasks that other gladers don't want to do. "i won't allow you to be a slopper," he said. "if anythin' we'll assign you to the gardens. it's where i spend most of my time."
she blushed at the thought of newt placing her somewhere he can see her most. "were you always just second in command, or did you work on something else before?"
he was quiet, but after a few minutes he spoke. "i was a runner."
she thought about his limp, and knew that's probably why he wasn't a runner anymore and sensed that she was trudging through uncomfortable territory. "don't tell me," she said softly. "it's not something i need to know unless you want to tell me. we can talk about something else."
"i'll tell you," he said. "just not tonight, not while we're locked up and can't even see each other."
for a second she thought about telling him what thomas had told her. she knew he wouldn't be the kind of person to judge her for it but for some reason she kept her mouth shut.
"i have to give you somethin'," said newt.
a second later his hand was reaching around the bars. she stood up and moved to the door, gently unfolding his fingers to find a chain; a rusted silver chain. she held it in her hand and admired how the moonlight glinted off of it.
"it's beautiful," she said in awe. "but i can't accept it."
she thought about the secret she was keeping from him, the one about thomas and she couldn't imagine accepting a gift when she hasn't told him about it. it really was beautiful though.
"i've had that thing in my pocket ever since i arrived here," he explained. "never knew what to do with it. it never served a purpose, but now it does. keep it, as a reminder that beautiful things can exist in the glade. you can exist in the glade. no matter what gally or anyone else says."
hayley looked down at the red ribbon on her wrist, then after some thought she looped the chain around the same wrist, clasping it into place.
it's cute because thomas brodie-sangster actually does have a chain that he always wears around his neck. (check gif) only it's gold i think.
newt didn't believe that beautiful things can happen in the glade, which is why he jumped off the maze wall. hayley gave him a reason to believe that beautiful things actually can exist in the glade.
and now she has two tokens; the red ribbon and the silver chain.
