thomas stood up straighter and moved to stand between hayley and the guards. "you're not touching her," he warned, his body quivering with anger. "if you're taking her you have to take me too. we're both going to the maze, we should be prepared at the same time."

the two guards shared a look before the taller one said, "janson wants hayley prepared for the maze tonight and sent up through the box first thing in the morning. no one said anything about you going up at the same time."

"it doesn't matter whether they're sent up together or separate," surprisingly this came from teresa. "take them both. i'll see to it that janson finds out and he'll tell ava paige."

"we were given clear orders," the guard said. "step aside or we'll force you to."

thomas couldn't move for a few minutes, the shock of it all taking over his body.

hayley walked over to him and laced her fingers through his. she looked up at him and smiled a small smile, even though she had tears in her eyes. "it's going to be okay," she whispered. "it's what i wanted."

thomas took a deep breath, allowing himself to breathe again. he knew it was coming but he didn't expect it to be so soon. hayley pulled thomas along with her as they followed the guards out of the room.

as they walked into the hallway, they passed by teresa. she stood with her back against the wall, watching them walk. they reached the elevator and the guards blocked their way inside. "this is where you leave," one of them said, staring at thomas.

before thomas could reply, hayley quickly wrapped her arms around him. he leaned into her and held tightly, never wanting to let her go. "i'm not ready to forget you but it doesn't look like i have a choice," she said against his chest.

he couldn't speak, afraid that if he did he wouldn't be able to keep himself from crying. the guard grabbed hayley's arm and pulled her out of thomas's grasp and into the elevator.

"the sooner the better, right?" said hayley. "for chuck, for newt."

the last glimpse he had of her was with tears in her eyes before the elevator doors shut.
