My interpretation of season 3 episode 5 "Into The Woods" with a twist. PS I think this song 'I've been waiting for you' from Mamma Mia 2 Here We Go Again suits this plot so well.

Maya's POV

Pruitt was a little late after our arrival though I didn't pay much attention. I blame my crappy childhood on my ludicrous behaviour. Each groan of frustration hit me deeper than they thought. Ever heard of the phrase 'When you throw a rock into the ocean you never know how deep it goes,' well that with insults. The others were sat round the camp fire as the sun was going down in the background spouting yet another round of insults in my direction, they wonder why they don't my biggest secret. The reason if they cared to find out on why I chose the captain's job, Evangeline or Evie my daughter. Or Jack's daughter, our child. She's 6 as of 2020, born as a result of a one night stand being a mother gave me the compassion I needed to excel at my job.

Captain Herrera knew as he is her godfather and the best person I could ever ask for in her life, Andy didn't know and he promised not to tell her. I couldn't have done this without him, I wonder what's taking him so long.

Pruitt's POV

19 the team I built to be a family was now outcasting one of there own and worst of all not giving them a chance to explain there decisions. Maya really took the job for the ability to take work home with her meaning she can spend more time with her daughter, when she was little eg under 2 it was 'easy' to stay away. I tried talking her out of it saying that at any age a child needs there only parent especially as when they are growing up as they know there parents love is all they need.

I glanced at the time as I pulled up to the country park, I spotted the 2 FD vans parked off to one side under the shade. "Ready to go see your mum?" I asked Evie in the back seat, "Yeah I want my mummy," I helped her out before setting off up the trail with stuff for her as well.

Maya's POV

Only I heard the crackling of footsteps on the trail. I only heard it as I was trying to tune out 19 openly mocking me. It killed me hearing them. I looked up to see Cap at the trail I knew by the look on his face he had heard the insults, he looked horrified. A pink mass came out from behind him and ran directly at me, "Mummy!" Evie yelled running as fast as her little legs could carry her, "Evie what are you doing here?" I asked hugging her, "Grandpa Pru brought me, can I meet your friends?" How can you tell a 6 year old that I don't want her heart broken like 19 have broken mine, "No not now sweetie mummy and her friends are having a little bit of a quarrel right now," "Can't you just hug it out like we do at school?" "It's a very grown up argument as much as hugging it out is a good idea it won't work," "Okay, can I go play?!" "Just don't leave the camp site," she innocently went running around the large clearing we had selected for the trip.

Took a total of 5 minutes for 19 to notice Evie running around, I rejoined the others at the campfire but kept a close eye on her, "Why is there a kid running around the place?" Andy finally asked, "Most importantly where are the parents?" Just as Travis said that a sharp sound of something being broken drew all our attention away from the bonfire, Evie came out of the bushes knee oozing blood, "This is why you don't leave a child unsupervised," "Mummy it hurts," she came straight towards me where I was waiting with antiseptic wipes and a plaster. "I know it does Eves," with a few swift moments the cut was plastered and no longer an issue. She was still very distraught,  "Tickles," I whispered heading straight for her weak spot. She giggled loudly yelling at me to stop, eventually we were both laughing. My mind whirled back to the conversation I had had with my neighbours a few weeks ago.

Flashback (don't do these often enough)

"Maya hey, we were just talking about our greatest achievements," one of the four women said in the group, I let Eve's in before turning back to them for a little chin-wag, "That's cool what are yours? Mine is winning gold at the 2012 Olympics in the 1000 meter sprint, broke the world record on a sprained ankle," "Oh so not Evangeline," "She is definitely up there, being a mother doesn't truly define me as a person it definitely affects a vast majority of my life and Evangeline is my everything, it's hard to explain really," "It's really concerning how you don't think your kid's your greatest achievement," "I think Evangeline would be better with one of us if you think like that," "Seriously? I won Olympic gold on a broken ankle and you think that wouldn't trump one of the hardest and joyous parts of my life, I had a life before Evangeline which is something you've clearly never had."

End of flashback

"Maya why is that child calling you mum?" Vic asked very curious indeed, "Because she is my daughter, yes I never told you about her because you have made it abundantly clear that you don't care and I don't want my child growing up around two faced," I clicked trying to think of a young ears appropriate word, "Two faced demons, you are lucky there are young ears around. As it's all out in the open now I'll explain why I applied for captain because I was done sticking up for people who didn't give a monkeys about me. So excuse me for being selfish for a half second for wanting to be able to provide a better life for my daughter, for wanting her to grow up with a mum after her dad abandoned her. You didn't even give me a minute to explain, yes I have been harsh on you but it's how I've been wired, you can fight back I am sorry but Evie? She can't and I'm terrified of loosing it with her to the point where I am poorly redirecting my frustration and I am sorry. Can we just go to bed," can't wait for tomorrow, my mind thought sarcastically. Yay!
