"I can only agree with Norah on that. We finally want to know the truth." Nat asked, taking her sister's hands in hers and both looking expectantly at their parents.
"Alright, but mom and I will only tell you the story only under one condition," Logan said. He cleared his throat as the four of them sat in front of the hotel's fireplace.
"Okay. And that would be what, Dad?" came Nathalie in a somewhat concerned voice.
"That we stop immediately if it gets too much for you or even me and your mother, okay?" said Logan, taking a sip of his fruit tea and looking at his daughters seriously.
"We can live with that, can't we, Norah?" Nathalie responded to her father's demands. Norah nodded in response, hoping for any answers.
"Well then, let's get started. Thirteen years and six months ago to the day you were taken from us, Norah. Your dad and I tried everything to find you again as soon as possible. Sometimes it seems like only yesterday that you were gone. For us, October 14, 2010, was the worst day of our lives. The FBI and the police gave us hope that progress was being made in the investigation. But about six months after your kidnapping..." Rory stopped for a moment to collect herself. Emotions nearly overwhelmed her. But she was aware that this conversation would open up old wounds again.
"Rory? Ace? I can keep talking if you want; I see how hard it is for you," Logan immediately took the floor, took her face in his hands, and looked into her blue eyes, where the first tears had already gathered.
"Yes...that...that would be a good idea, MAC..." she whispered in a brittle voice, leaning on her husband's shoulder, and despite the difficult situation, she was glad to be able to let herself go without having to think about possible consequences. In such moments she was glad that she had found in Logan, the person with whom she would stay together for the rest of her life, even if her marriage had many ups and downs in the last years.
"It's okay, Ace. Unfortunately, one day before your birthday, April 13, 2011, the FBI had closed the investigation. Easter 2011 was the worst Easter that your mother and I had experienced. We, therefore, decided to take Nathalie to Rory's parents over the holidays so that we could contact Agent Muller, who had been leading your case for six months.
But all our efforts were for nothing, as the case was closed. Your mother and I were so emotionally drained, and the constant recriminations that your mom and I had been giving each other were turning me more and more into Grandpa Mitchum.
I had worked a lot because that was my way of running away from my feelings and fear of failing as a father. We functioned in society as a loving couple at various charity galas and events we were invited to. However, we never let anyone see behind our facade. Neither Uncle Finn, Colin, Robert, or our parents truly knew the extent of our misery," Logan continued while he tried to maintain eye contact with his daughters to see how they were feeling.Norah cast a quick sideways glance at her sister. Their eyes met in a silent agreement to always be there for each other no matter what obstacles lay in their paths. Then, to her parents, she said, "That...that must have been so incredibly hard for you and mom what you had to go through because of me. I'm so sorry..."
"Hey Norah, honey, you are not to blame at all. You don't know how happy we all are that I found you by chance in Vienna. This is our greatest miracle. When I was able to hold you in my arms for the first time after a few weeks, I swore I would never let you out of my sight again. But I wasn't successful. However, I don't want to burden you with it now." Logan finished his sentence, took a deep breath, and could hardly believe that he could talk so openly about this topic. If someone had told him five days ago that his trip to Vienna would bring back his kidnapped daughter, he would have asked him if he had lost his mind. But one of the biggest challenges Rory and he would face tomorrow, or maybe even today. Tristan DuGrey, a name he would like to forget immediately. But with Rory at his side, they would overcome this obstacle together.
The more Nathalie learned about her father's and mother's feelings, the deeper her love and respect for her parents developed. She had never seen her parents so open towards her. This, of course, resulted from the fact that they had just found their daughter, her twin sister Emma Katherine Hoffmann aka Norah Emma Katherine Huntzberger, who was thought to be lost forever after such a long time.
Rory regained her composure and began to speak again, "I agree with your dad; this whole situation is hard enough for you guys. And I know you want to know why we required you to break up with Jason Dolly. I knew Jason's dad for quite a long time since he went to the same class with me at Chilton until he was sent to a military academy in North Carolina by his dad because of major problems.
After that, I didn't see or hear from him for years until your dad and I met him again with his ex-wife at some charity events. Your dad tried to stay friendly and matter-of-fact with Tristan for my sake, which I was pleased about at the time because we hardly made any new friends with other married couples after Norah's loss. But two days ago, my hatred for Tristan DuGrey became so huge because...."
"Don't tell me Jason's dad had something to do with Norah's disappearance, Mom. That would be the worst nightmare ever for me..." Nat interrupted her mother, looking at her with a fearful expression on her face and feeling the despair almost taking her breath away.
"I...wish I could give you another answer, Nathalie Honey, but unfortunately, Tristan was one of the masterminds behind Norah's kidnapping. That's why dad and I agreed right away that you have to get rid of Jason as soon as possible. I am so sorry for everything, my sweetheart. We never wanted you to go through the same emotional chaos as we did." Rory tried to explain to her.
Natalie's face fell. She stared wide-eyed for a moment before she threw herself into her mother's arms and started to cry heavily. "This can't be true; it hurts so much. Why did I get involved with this person? Why?" she burst out sobbing while Rory tried her best to be there for her daughter.
"I don't know, sweetie, but sometimes life itself can be pretty challenging and painful. The people we meet in our lives are a kind of challenge for us; some are good, some are bad. But we're there for you and your sister. Every step of the way, and the good news is that your dad and I and, of course, uncle Colin are going to kick Tristan's ass in London. "
"Does this mean that uncle Alex caught Tristan? I only heard a few scraps of conversation when my other mom took the call." Norah asked.
"Yeah, he caught him, and now they're doing the interrogation at the MI05 headquarters in London. Tomorrow morning agent Muller and his team are going to transfer him to the New Yorker FBI headquarters," confirmed Logan while Norah looked at him with a small smile, got up from the couch, and hugged her father.
"Thanks for being here for me, daddy. I know the next few months will be challenging and hard for all of us. But I'm glad to have such an amazing support system as you guys and of course my adoptive parents, Sophie and my other siblings on my side.". she whispered with a tearful voice, and then the first tears were streaming down her cheeks.
