Combat class. This is what we were here for. Yes, bribing some free room and board out of people was a huge reason we had come to LGSFA, but the real reason we came was because we could be legitimately useful here. If only people realized that.
Unfortunately, Sky wasn't in my class. That meant Sky couldn't protect me, and I couldn't keep Sky from blowing up at people. Also, I had to tell our story alone. Which made no sense because it was our story.
Either way, I yeeted myself into the classroom, subjecting myself to weird looks and one big smile, the latter from the only nice person in the room. Three guesses who.
"Good of you to show up, Lillian," the teacher sighed snarkily. I looked at the clock. I was so not late! What was her problem?! "Class, this is Lillian... what was your last name?"
"Unimportant," I replied breezily.
(Author's brain: Unimportant; there's a million things I haven't done, but just you wait... just you wait...)
Anyway...
The teacher rolled her eyes. "And what do you know?"
"Now that's important," I laughed. So I told them about my parents. My good grandparents and my bad ones. And my uncle. My amazing, incredible uncle.
"So... even when you were all alone, Sky was there for you?" I could see Tempest's nasty feelings toward Sky were conflicting with my description of him. Which meant she believed me and was now confused. We're making progress.
"That's the thing!" I continued enthusiastically. "Thanks to Sky, I've never been alone, and as long as Sky's alive, I'll never be alone."
Everyone stared at me for a minute, but then their attention turned to the door. Sky had just burst in. "About frickin' time I found the right room," he moaned, striding over to me.
"Young man, we are in the middle of a class session and you are not in this class. Now, I suggest you tell me your name so I can give you the appropriate write-up..."
"What?" Sky interrupted my new teacher.
"What do you mean, what?"
"A write-up is bad. I wouldn't want a bad thing to happen to me. Yet you can't write me up without my name. So, if I know the second I tell you my name something bad will happen, I just don't understand why that would give me any incentive to tell you my name," Sky explained.
"Ms. Randolf, this is the infamous Sky," Tempest purred, all too helpfully.
"Shut up, Tempest!" Sky, Grey, and I all sighed.
My-new-teacher-Randolf-lady-whatever-her-name-was was looking very confused, and I could tell Grey was suppressing the urge to yell jinx, when we heard a big boom followed by a bloodcurdling scream.
"Attention, teachers and students!" The loudspeaker crackled to life. "This is not a drill! I repeat, this is not a drill! The Shadow is attacking! All students under 18, get to a safe classroom, any room with a teacher in it. If you are already with a teacher, stay put. Students 18 and above have permission to engage, but you must follow all orders given by any staff member. Teachers, stay with your students unless your entire class is at least 18 and has chosen to fight, in which case either assist another teacher with a younger class or engage. I repeat, this is not a drill! The Shadow is attacking!"
"You heard him! Is anyone in this class 18?" Randolph asked. A couple students, Grey among them stood up. "Then you may fight if you wish. If you feel you are not ready, you may stay here, no questions asked. If you do wish to engage, please line up by the door."
"Wait!" Sky cried. "I want to fight too."
"You have got to be kidding me!" Tempest moaned from her desk.
"Any student 18 or over may fight if they wish. Just follow orders," Randolf told Sky pointedly.
"Sky!" I whisper-shouted. "Sky, you're not 18!"
"I know, but they don't."
"I want to fight too!" I spoke defiantly. Grey and the other non-minors were shuffling out.
"Yeah, honey, I highly doubt you're 18," Randolf sighed.
"It's ok. I'll protect her," Sky insisted.
"She's not 18!" Randolf insisted.
Sky dragged me towards the door. Right before his head rounded the corner, he retorted, "Yeah, well, neither am I." And we were off.
