There's a consistent chattering that floats through the walls of the house, and as Dan climbs into bed besides his wife, she puts her book down with a gracing smile on her face.
"Should we tell them they're being too loud?"
Dan pauses for a second to listen, just as an eruption of laughter can be heard. "They're having fun."
"They have school tomorrow. And they might wake up Mara."
Still, Dan shakes his head. "It's their last day, I doubt they'll need to be awake for much." And he nods towards the cradle in the corner of the room, holding a little girl they'd taken in a couple weeks ago. "She's fast asleep." He settles down and pulls the cover up to his chin, but his head pops up again when Erin starts to stand up. "You okay?"
She sighs, "Last day or not, they have the whole summer to stay up late doing whatever they want..." she leans against the wall for a little support before shuffling from the room.
"Boys?" she calls lightly, knocking her hand against their door and slowly pushing it open. All that greets her is a large mound on Felix's bed nearest the door, light shining through the duvet cover. "Boys?"
A head pokes out one side, and Jeongin looks at her with feigned innocence, "Yes?"
With a roll of her eyes, Erin walks over and peels back the cover from their heads, slipping herself underneath it to join them. "You having fun?"
They nod slowly.
"Think about going to sleep soon, please. You still have school tomorrow."
Felix groans. "But Mum-"
She silences him with a finger to her lips. "Felix," she says with a stern look. The two of them never usually call them Mum and Dad, but Felix has worked up a habit of doing it when he's trying to get his own way. It rarely makes any difference.
His shoulders droop and he sighs. "Fine. Goodnight."
Jeongin ducks out from their makeshift tent and slinks into his own bed by the window, burrowing himself deeply into the soft covers. Erin presses a kiss to both of their foreheads and bids them a last goodnight before softly shutting their door and heading back to her own room.
The last day of school and the weekend pass, and Monday morning comes with a bright blue sky and light, cool breeze.
"Felix!" Erin's voice bounces off the house walls.
"Yeah?"
"Come here." It doesn't take long for Felix to appear in the doorway to the kitchen, looking slightly sheepish. He doesn't think he's done anything wrong recently... although sometimes he forgets.
"Yeah?" His feet shuffle awkwardly on the tiled floor.
Erin glances over her shoulder, dark hair tied up into a messy topknot and flour over the front of her apron. "Can you go get Jeongin up?" She smiles. "You can both make brownies today."
At that Felix's face splits into a grin and he does a little jump in joy. "Okay!" he enthuses, turning to sprint upstairs and bound into his and Jeongin's shared room, not even trying to hide his excitement.
He expects Jeongin to already be awake, as they both normally wake with the sun and haven't yet fallen down the rabbit hole of always wanting to sleep till noon. So, Felix bursts through the door with the vigour of a beast and stands stock-still in their doorway when he realises that in actuality, Jeongin is still fast asleep. A small tuft of hair peeks above his pale green duvet cover. Felix walks over and slowly pulls back part of the duvet, using his hand to block the sun from Jeongin's eyes.
