the alarm clock went off announcing that it was 7:30 am on a monday morning; monday, april 9th. bella softly groaned, reaching over to the bedside table to silence her alarm. she turned to the side, reaching out to the other side of the bed only to find it empty; there was a single rose bouquet and a birthday card which read:
a beautiful rose for a beautiful girl. happy birthday, my love. – J.L. p.s. : you're gonna love where i'm taking you tonight.
bella smiled as she smelt the rose, inhaling the sweet aroma. she placed the rose in some water before heading back to the bedroom to change into some workout clothes, in order to go for a morning run. she placed her hair into a ponytail as she grabbed her walkman, as well as a cassette.
she exited the apartment and drove to the beach. on her off days, she would normally go for a run on the beach or aerobics with chrissy. upon arriving to the beach, she placed the headphones on and started running.

FLASHBACK— NEW YORK CITY, 1987
"you're awake, finally." johnny chuckled as he walked back into the small bedroom, getting dressed for the work day.
"hi babe." bella smiled sleepily as she softly yawned and rubbed her eyes. she sat up as johnny walked over to her side of the bed and sat on the edge.
"morning birthday girl." johnny smiled as he pecked bella's lips, bella smiling into the kiss. "i have a surprise for you, c'mon."
"should i be worried?" bella teased as she got out of bed, softly stretching.
"just trust me." johnny laughed as he covered her eyes and led her to the kitchen. bella giggled as he led her out of the bedroom and into the kitchen. he sat her down on a stool before removing his hands from her eyes. "okay, keep your eyes closed, i'll tell you when to open them."
"okay?" bella laughed as she closed her eyes. as she kept her eyes closed, johnny looked in the drawers for a lighter and the candle he had bought. "can i open my eyes now?"
"okay, open your eyes." johnny smiled as bella opened her eyes to find a small cupcake topped with a cherry and a small green candle. "happy birthday baby."
"thank you honey." bella smiled as she grabbed the small cupcake. "you shouldn't have."
"i got it from that bakery across the street." johnny smiled. "so? blow out the candle and make a wish."
