When Carter Lahey said her brother was crushed when Alison died, she meant it. Isaac Lahey was numb and quiet for days following the girl's death. He barely ate, slept, or went to the bathroom. Carter was forced to take care of him in her own world of pain. Alison was like family to her and she couldn't stand to lose anymore family.
Carter knew Isaac just needed time to process before he could actually feel something. But when a week passed and Carter hadn't even been able to get a good cry in, she was done. She screamed in Isaac's face for a good 15 minutes about how he wasn't the only one in pain, and she couldn't lose him in the same way she lost her. He had to snap out of it, she needed him.
So Isaac cried for the first time since her death. After that he got better. He started taking care of himself again, but he always managed to break down every once and a while in his sisters arms. It took three weeks before Argent packed everything and asked if the two wanted to go with him to France. Isaac didn't hesitate to agree. He wanted out of Beacon Hills and away from any and all supernatural issues.
It took a lot of yelling and a lot of convincing but eventually Isaac made the arrangements with Melissa McCall to leave his sister in her care. It was hard for the two to separate, but they had to. They both wanted different things. Carter wanted to protect Beacon Hills while Isaac just wanted out.
Isaac was never the same, not after losing the girl he loved.
And that's why Carter didn't want to fall for someone, because losing them is the worst pain to exist.
Carter could smell the determination on Liam. He was confident, ready. But as a random boy ran at Scott and Stiles, he managed to block him before he could get to the goal.
How did he all of a sudden get good?
...
oh.
Carter felt a little disappointed in her friend for using his werewolf abilities to stay captain. He had always told her he hated to used them on the field as it felt like cheating.
Kira was quietly cheering on the two males, while Malia just smiled whenever Stiles would look over. Carter knew the only reason the were-coyote came was to make Stiles happy.
Every player that came at the two boys, got knocked down. She was beginning to wonder how nobody had gotten hurt. But then Liam stepped up, and she began to grow nervous.
"Please don't hurt him." Carter whispered lowly, not knowing if Scott could hear her.
Liam did a dramatic move with his stick before he picked up the ball, running at Scott and Stiles. The latter reached him first, being easily dodged, which wasn't a surprise to anyone. It was when he managed to duck and avoid Scott's stick that everyone grew surprised. Liam then made the shot, making it perfectly in.
"God he's got the reflexes of a were-wolf." Carter mumbled to herself, hearing Kira make a noise of distress at her sort-of boyfriends loss. Liam glanced at her as he licked his lips, almost looking for approval. She grinned at him, clapping quietly to show he did well. He grinned and walked back to the back of the line.
"That was luck!" Malia was clearly upset. Carter looked up in surprise at her friend. "Do over!"
"Sweetheart, there's no do-overs this is practice." Coach corrected, laughing.
"Ten bucks on Scott and Stiles."
"I'll take that action. Hey! Get back in there, Liam!"
Carter glanced in between Coach and Malia a few times.
"Screw that. TEN ON LIAM!" Carter yelled, standing with Malia. Liam smirked in triumph as she was on his side.
"Carter!" Stiles looked offended.
"What? Someone's gotta be on his side."
Liam got back to the front, preparing himself to go again. Carter let out a breath of air, bouncing her leg. She didn't even have $10 to give if Liam lost.
The whistle blew, and Liam grabbed a ball as he ran. An animalist growl left Scott's throat as he went running as well. Again, Liam managed to easily avoid Stiles which sent the male clattering to the ground.
And then Scott flipped Liam over his shoulder, resulting in a sickening crack across the field.
"LIAM!"
The scream echoed across the field. Using her werewolf speed, Carter rushed to Liam, hellbent on making sure he was okay. His noises of pain indicted he was not okay and was in fact hurt. She didn't even care if people questioned how fast she was.
"DON'T MOVE! DON'T TOUCH HIM!" Coach screamed, running over. The last sentence was mostly aimed at Carter who was helping Liam remove his helmet.
"I'm okay, Coach. I'm alright." Liam tried to stand, only to let out a yell and fall back into Stiles and Scott's arms. "I think it's my leg."
"Shit, Liam."
"I think we better get him to the nurse." Stiles muttered, squinting to the sunlight. Coach pointed them off, making the three males and one female basically run towards the school.
"Nurse? He's gonna need a goddamn hospital. Scott you broke his ankle." Carter mumbled as she looked at her friend worriedly.
"I'm okay, I am." Liam grunted in pain, clearly unconvincing. Carter ran ahead, opening the door so the three could get inside no problem. She did the same with the nurses door.
Scott and Stiles left to change while Carter stayed and waited for what the nurse had to say. Liam obviously couldn't get changed and was left in his sweaty practice outfit.
"Do you want me to have them grab your stuff? Or I can have coach put it away until you can get it-"
"It'll still be there tomorrow." Liam smiled at her in reassurance. "Coach probably won't let me on the team now." He sounded like a kicked puppy.
"Yeah he will. Did you see that out there? You managed to bypass them when nobody else could. That second move was a penalty." Carter did her best to reassure him. There was no doubt he would be on the team.
"Yeah well I'm hurt." Liam mumbled, glancing down towards his ankle.
"Which means you'll only be out for a few weeks. Coach will let you in the field as soon as he can." Coach would let Liam on the field with a broken leg probably.
The nurse came in, and Stiles and Scott finally returned. She spent a good few minutes examining his leg. Carter held onto his hand, letting him squeeze if needed whenever she pressed into the wrong spot.
"Honestly kids, this could be a sprain or even a break. My recommendation would be go to the hospital." She glanced up from over her glasses. "I'm sure we'd all like to know what exactly is wrong since I do not have an x-ray machine here."
And so they prepared to go to the hospital. As Carter helped Liam with his things, Scott ran out to talk to Kira since he now had to take Liam to the hospital.
"If you get any blood in my jeep-"
"Stiles, I will clean your jeep myself if I have to but please shut up." The only reason Stiles was even letting Liam in his jeep was because this was basically his fault. He's the one who said to use the wolf powers to beat Liam. And now he's hurt.
Scott entered the nurses station again, a dazed look on his face. Carter smiled lightly to herself.
"Go kiss her, dumbass." Scott smiled to himself, running back through the door.
"Disgusting."
