Sixty-Six

Harry was growing impatient as they sat, waiting for the executioner and Fudge to show up, Past Juniper having already gone inside. They hear a shriek from inside, meaning Hermione found Scabbers. "Guys" Harry says and the two turn to look at him.

"What if we- we just run in there, and grab Pettigrew-" "No!" Hermione disagrees immediately. "Don't you understand? We're breaking one of the most important wizarding laws! Nobody's supposed to change time, nobody! You heard Dumbledore, if we're seen-"

"We'd only be seen by ourselves and Hagrid!" Harry argues but Hermione shakes her head. "Harry, what do you think you'd do if you saw yourself bursting into Hagrid's house?" Hermione asks and Harry thinks it over for a second. "I'll tell you what I'd do! Freak out!" Juniper scoffs.

"Exactly! You wouldn't understand, you might even attack yourself! Don't you see? Professor McGonagall told me what awful things have happened when wizards have meddled with time...loads of them ended up killing their past or future selves by mistake!" Hermione explains and Harry holds his hands up in surrender.

"Okay! It was just an idea. I just thought-" Juniper quickly gets both of their attention when she spots Dumbledore, Fudge, the Committee member and Macnair the executioner walk out the front doors of the castle in the distance.

"We're about to come out!" Hermione whispers. A couple moments pass and the back door opens up, the five of the hut's current inhabitants walking out. "It's okay, Beaky, it's okay..." Hagrid calls out towards Buckbeak when he notices Buckbeak pawing nervously at the ground. He then turns to look at the others. "Go on. Get goin'" Hagrid tells them but none of them move, instead trying to argue on why they should stay.

"Hagrid, we can't-" "We'll tell them what really happened-" "Maybe I can get them to reconsider-" "They can't kill him-" "Go! It's bad enough without you lot in trouble an' all!" They watch Past Hermione throw a cloak around the others. "Go quick. Don' listen..." They hear a knock from the front door of the hut and Hagrid heads back into his cabin, leaving his back door open just a crack. They see the sets of footprints move around Hagrid's yard as well as hear them for a little bit before they're gone, meaning the four had left.

Now was the hard part. The three listened into the conversation from inside the hut, all of them wondering how they'd pull this off. "Where is the beast?" Macnair asks. "Out- outside" Hagrid answers, his voice shaky. Hermione quickly pulls the two out of sight when Macnair takes a peak out of the back window. "We- er- have to read you the official notice of execution, Hagrid. I'll make it quick. And then you and Macnair need to sign it. Macnair, you're supposed to listen too, that's procedure-" Fudge explains.

Macnair moves away from the window, giving them the perfect chance to rescue Buckbeak. Harry goes to say something but Juniper had already stood. "It would make most sense if I went and got him. He trusts me most" Juniper tells them. Hermione nods and reluctantly, Harry does too. Juniper waits to hear Fudge's voice before sneaking into the pumpkin patch and over to Buckbeak.

"It is the decision of the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures that the Hippogriff Buckbeak, hereafter called the condemned, shall be executed on the sixth of June at sundown-" Juniper scoffs to herself. "Was it the Committee's decision or was it their fear?" She mutters to herself. Juniper bows to Buckbeak, like she's done multiple times before and Buckbeak bows back before rising to his feet.

Juniper turns her attention to the rope keeping him in place. "We're getting you out of here, Buckbeak. You'll be free" Juniper reassures him. "Sentenced to execution by beheading, to be carried out by the Committee's appointed executioner, Walden Macnair...as witnessed below. Hagrid, you sign here...". Juniper tries to pull on his rope but Buckbeak seemed to have other ideas as he tugged back, digging his feet in a little.
