The human’s name was Jacob, and he was adorable. He had chocolate-brown curls atop his head and jaw-dropping gray eyes. Not to mention he was fit. Very fit. For a scientist, that is. And he had this laugh–this amazingly wonderful laugh–that was music to my ears. I melted a little when he laughed.
We took an escorted car-ride to an airport where we’d catch a private jet to whichever portal was closest. I was surprised Zack could keep his jaw out of his lap, and even more surprised his eyes weren’t glued to the human. I felt as if I was drooling in the backseat. But then I remembered Zack was sitting next to me, and he preferred me over anyone else in his demon-PMS stage.
I spent a lot of time listening to Zack’s thoughts, and they darkened with each mile we drove. Some were about me, some were about the human, and some contained both. Zack only held my hand in the car ride, but I knew we’d end up in the same seat on the jet. He wanted to snuggle, and bad, too. Not as much as I needed it, though. I craved to feel his arms wrapped around me–to shield me from the scary worlds and scarier people. But sometimes, he was part of the scarier people.
The human spoke to the humans driving rather than us, and I saw that as an interesting move on his part. I decided he was anxious, and shy on top of that. I tapped his shoulder, getting him to turn around.
“You do know we exist, right? And we’re going to be spending quite a bit of time with you?” I chuckled. He blushed. “I want to get to know you before I have to trust you going through a portal, Jacob.”
You say his name cool, Zack smiled. Makes me wish my name was Jacob.
“You’re Zack, though,” I beamed. “The Zack Wells–the general that helped lead the Beings to victory against the Elders and the general that robbed me of my heart before I knew what you were even doing.”
He blushed lightly, kissing my cheek gently. “Don’t plan on getting it back, Madam Savior.”
“Why, if you don’t mind my asking,” Jacob turned around in his seat to face us, “do you call yourselves Beings? Humans sometimes call themselves beings, but yours is specifically…Beings.”
“We used to be called the Supernatural Beings, and then it transitioned into the Supernatural, but that was way too long,” Zack smiled, eyes scaling the human obviously. “So we shortened it to Beings.”
“Don’t call us creatures,” I nodded. “Makes us sound repulsive, when we are, in fact, more civilized and advanced than you humans.”
“Yes, ma’am,” he nodded. “Why does everyone call you the Savior?”
I grinned, loving the limelight from him. “I saved the Beings from their death. We had a war that wasn’t too long ago–not for me anyway–and we would’ve lost miserably. But Athena prophesized centuries ago that a leader–built from all the Beings and Elders–would rise up and take control to lead the Beings to victory. And that was me.”
“You saved an entire species?”
“No, I saved a lot of species,” I corrected. “Mermaids, demons, angels, gods, goddesses, dragon-bloods, witches, phoenixes, anything. Everything.”
“What are Elders?” he frowned. “You keep saying that, but I don’t know what they are.”
“Elders are the Beings that dominated us. They had more power and were much older, and they’d been supposedly wiped out in a war millennia before ours. But they came back–some think a Being revived them–and wanted to destroy Being- and human-kind. But we rely on you, so we had to save you, too,” I recounted all the books I’d read and what I’d lived through myself. Jacob nodded.
