i wasn't sure what had went wrong. the team and i had hit the nail on the head when it came to the profile. we came up with a fool proof plan to bring him into custody. yet here i was, laying on the roof of a warehouse fighting for my life.

i dragged myself to my feet, seeing the unsub getting up as well. I wiped some of the blood from the corner of my mouth as I watched him pick up the blade he'd been using.

"What happened agent? Your team always appears to have everything figured out"

"We do" I said waiting for his next move

"So why is it you're here alone. Which part of your profile was off?"

"We didn't think you'd strong enough to face your victims head on. You murdered all those others without them even catching a glimpse of what you looked like."

He stepped closer to me, grinding his teeth ever so slightly. "Well I think you're special Agent, you've seen me in all of my glory"

"ON THE ROOF" I could hear members of the team yelling from the ground. I wasn't sure if they'd get here in time.

"You really want to kill an FBI agent Caden?" I asked unable to create any more space between us

"You saw what I did to those others, and like you said they never even saw my face. Imagine what I'm going to do to you."

"You talk too much"

He swung the blade and the fight began again. I was tired but so was he. I wanted to live, but it was starting to feel more and more like I had no control over the situation.

My foot slipped on something making him slowly corner me.

"I applaud you agent. You put up one hell of a fight. Get up."

I rose to my feet as he placed the blade against my abdomen not applying pressure. We locked eyes as the roof door swing open.

"Caden DROP THE WEAPON" Morgan yelled. I locked eyes with Spencer giving him a small smile.

"I love you." I mouthed with teary eyes

One of the officers opened fire making him shove the blade in making me gasp as he fell towards me. I watched as Spencer ran towards me but I was already falling backwards.

Spencer Reid
The moment was replaying in my head in slow motion. The science of it all. Was I running too slow? Did the gunshot have something to do with it? Maybe if we'd gotten here faster.

All I could see was her reaching for me, and me reaching for her as she fell off the roof. I laid there in shock now watching her lay on the ground below lifeless. Morgan pulled me back from the edge and I looked into my hand seeing her necklace with a ring on it.

"I was trying to grab her shirt..." i said feeling my eyes well up with tears

"Come on kid let's get you out of here" Morgan said pulling me to my feet

I nervously twiddled my thumbs as I waited for Riley to finish getting ready.

"What's got you all antsy this morning Doctor?" she asked with a raised eyebrow

"I made reservations for us to go to this really nice restaurant tonight"

"It's fine, we can just go out when we get back from this case"

"Well this was the first opening they have for another 5 months"

"Then it just wasn't meant for us to go, you usually don't like places like that, why's this bothering you so much?" she asked turning around, now done with her hair

"I was going to propose to you tonight" I said looking up and meeting her eyes, not being able to read them

There was silence for about 39 seconds before she spoke.

"Do it now"

"What?"

"Tell me you love me, tell me why, and propose to me. Come on"

She spoke trying to hide her excitement. I smiled, pulled out the ring box and got down on one knee beginning my impromptu speech.

"Will you marry me Riley?"

"Of course I will Spencer" she leaned down connecting our lips but i stood up pulling her into an even deeper kiss

"We'll tell the team after this case. I'm going to keep this on my necklace for the day if you don't mind"

I watched as she placed the ring on the chain and I reattached the hooks, adjusting it on her neck.

"It looks perfect there" she smiled at my comment and we made our way to the BAU

"What's going on Hotch?" she asked concerned with his disheveled appearance

"Caden Wheeler has reappeared"

I sat on a box staring at the location where her body had fallen.

This wasn't fair. I should be walking out of here with her. But all I had to hold onto were memories and a necklace with a ring attached to it.

i promise i'll do something other than spencer next he just lives in my head rent free
