“Sophia, we’re going to Greece!” Mrs. Isabella Peterson smiled happily. Greece? You have got to be kidding me.

“Greece?!” Sophia screeches, “No way am I going to Greece!”

“Why not honey?” Isabella’s smile fades.

“Because, you promised me we would go to Paris!” Sophia stomped her foot.

“Well, suck it up Sophia Rose,” Mr. Raymond Peterson walked in, straightening his tie.

“No! I refuse to go!” Sophia crossed her arms.

Isabella sighed, “Then why don’t you stay with a relative?”

“Bella - we have no other living family,” Raymond reminded her.

“Well what else could we do?” Isabella frowned.

“Can I stay with Jessica?” Sophia asked hopefully.

“No, no. She’s too much of a party animal, and, I don’t like you hanging out with her anyways,” Isabella waved the thought away.

“What about Sierra?” Sophia pleaded.

“No, Sophia. Let me think… what about the Mason’s?” Isabella lit up.

“The Mason’s? You mean Ryan Mason? The kid I used to play with when I was like, 6?” Sophia asked.

“Since you were 10, honey. Why not? I’m still good friends with Helena.”

“Alright! What‘s the worst that could happen?” Sophia cracked a smile.

--

“Sophia! Oh my God, it’s been too long!” Mrs. Helena Mason hugged Sophia.

“Hi, Helena! It’s so great to see you again!” Sophia hugged back.

“Sophia,” Mr. Robert Mason hugged Sophia.

“Reba!” Sophia laughed at the name she’d accidentally called Robert when she was 8.

“So where’s Ryan?” Sophia looked around.

“Uh, he’s at home,” Helena bit her bottom lip.

“Oh, oh well,” Sophia shrugged.

--

“Ryan! We’re home!” Helena called as soon as they walked in the front door. The threesome were surprised when they didn’t see Ryan rushing down the stairs.

“Come on Sophia,” Helena said, guiding Sophia to Ryan’s room.

“Ryan, Sophia’s here,” Helena opened the door.

“’Sup,” Ryan looked up.

“Uh, nothin’. ’Sup with you?” Sophia tried. She wasn’t used to this “skater talk” or whatever.

Ryan was quiet.

“Well I have to go cook dinner! Be down in an hour ok, kids?” Helena left.

“So, Ryan, what’s been going on with you since I’ve left?” Sophia managed.

“Nothing. Ok, your room’s opposite mine. Bye,” Ryan said, then put his headphones on looked away.

“Um, ok,” Sophia was surprised at how he’d treated her. She walked out his door and went into her own.

Sophia unpacked her clothes into the dresser and closet. She  put her Macbook Air on the desk.

“Dinner!” Helena called from downstairs. Sophia rushed down immediately.

“This smells great, Helena!” Sophia smiled.

“Aw, it’s nothing,” Helena shrugged.

“Mommy, mommy!” A little boy with curly brown hair and overalls came bouncing into the room.

“Who’s this?” Sophia gasped, sitting down at a random chair.

“This is Kyle, Sophia. He’s three. Didn’t your mother tell you? I sent her a letter about it,” Helena said.

“Oh yeah! So this is Kyle! Aw, he’s so cute!” Sophia smiled.

Ryan slowly walked down the stairs and looked at Sophia, sitting in his chair.

“That’s my char,” Ryan said.

“Oh, sorry!” Sophia said, getting up. Helena looked at Ryan disapprovingly, but he didn’t seem to notice. He just sat down and ate quietly, while the others were chatting. When he finished, he quietly got up and walked back up to his room.

“What’s wrong?” Sophia asked, once he was gone.

“I don’t know, sweetheart. I don’t even remember when this happened. All I know, is that I love him either way. Even if he is… what he is right now. Which is… I don’t know,” Helena stammered.

“Maybe it’s just a phase,” Sophia placed her hand on top of Helena’s.

“Hopefully,” Helena muttered.
