“I don’t get it, it’s like he hates me now. Why won’t you tell me what Ryan has to do with you? Why is he mad I’m hanging out with you?” Sophia asked Melissa.

“Hmm, it’s really not my place to tell you Soph… if Ry-Bear isn’t wanting to tell you of our… past,” Melissa winked jokingly, “then I shall not either.”

“Melly!” Sophia threw her teddy bear at Melissa, “Seriously!”

“I am being serious. Completely and udder-ly serious,” Melissa laughed.

“Melissa, seriously!” after weeks and weeks of deciding, Sophia called Melissa, now here they were, best of friends. You would’ve thought they’ve been friends since birth. But they weren’t.

“Ooh, I gotta go,” Melissa said, looking at her Samsung Corby, “Mom said I had to be home by four.”

“It’s already five!”

“I know, I know. Five missed calls from your mother at fifteen minutes past four, ya gotta give her time to calm down.”

“Go, go, go! I don’t want Melinda getting mad at me, even though I didn’t do anything,” Sophia widened her eyes, Melinda Driscoll was Melissa’s mother.

“Yeah she seems to do that huh? ‘Sophia, you’re a sweet girl and all, but I need Melissa to come home when I want her to come home. Understand?’” Melissa mimicked her mother.

“Yes ma’am, now go!” Sophia pushed Melissa out the door.

Sophia sighed and flopped on her bed. Time to get ready for dinner. Helena said that her parents - Ryan’s grandparents - were coming over for dinner. Soph really hoped they would like her.

Helena recommended something sophisticated yet casual, so Sophia put on a knee-length skirt and a blouse. She walked down the stairs and saw Ryan playing Black Ops.

“Oh! Sophia! You’re here! Well Soph, meet my parents, Regina and Lance O’Malley. I bet you never knew that huh? O’Malley is my maiden name,” Helena smiled.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Sophia Rose Peterson,” Sophia offered a hand to shake, but Regina O’Malley was not pleased.

“Child, what are you wearing?” Regina O’Malley cried. Her hand was covered with jewelry, and she wore expensive clothing.

“Um, a skirt and a blouse ma‘am,” Sophia said uncertainly.

“Haven’t you ever heard of Chanel? Or Marc Jacobs?”

“Those stuff are expensive ma’am.”

“Young lady, do not say ‘stuff’. ‘Stuff’ means anything, any crud, any garbage," Regina sniffed.

“I’m sorry ma’am,” Sophia stuttered.

“Tut, tut, very well then. I guess I’ll just not look at you,” Regina sniffed.

Sophia’s mouth dropped, how can an old lady act this way? I bet there was no Juicy Couture or Marc Jacobs when she was young. Ugh! And how can she afford all this STUFF?! Sophia thought. She looked at Helena who merely smiled meekly.

“Don’t worry Soph, Regina’s just grumpy because they ran out of a special type of Chanel bags that she wanted. She’s usually pretty nice,” Robert whispered.

“Thanks Reba,” Sophia grinned.

--

“Why does she hate me so much?” Sophia’s tear-stained face looked up at Ryan who was patting her back, he broke out of his anger at Soph to comfort her. At dinner Regina purposely spilled lemonade on Sophia’s skirt, dropped mashed potatoes on her blouse, and got mad when Sophia asked for her to pass the fried chicken, saying, “Child you’re fat enough already!”. Helena nervously picked at her food and Robert and Ryan were stunned. Mr. O’Malley just patted his wife’s hand nervously. 5 minutes later Sophia’s tears dared to spill so she excused herself and ran to her room. Another 5 minutes later Ryan showed up and now here they were.

Sophia 1st Person

10 minutes ago I managed to convince Ryan to leave me alone. I just wanted to do the cliché teenager thing of curling up into fetal position and blast Linkin Park and Mayday Parade. So I did.

--

I was in the middle of a nightmare when I heard screaming voices. I woke up groggily and noticed the sweat all over my back. Ugh, I always sweated when I had a nightmare. My hair stuck to my neck and the covers were all around my legs. I crept downstairs and saw Helena and Mrs. O’Malley screaming at each.

“Mother I will not tolerate you screaming at Sophia! That’s like you screaming at Ryan - I just can’t stand it. If you continue to act like this toward her you won’t be welcome here anymore,” Helena said harshly.

“Helena how can you say that? What was I supposed to do? Sit there not expressing myself? That girl is a magnet toward fashion disasters!”

“Well so was I, Mother, when I was young.”

“If I had a chance to change that I would, but Helena darling you have to understand, times are different now.”

“Mother that still doesn’t explain your behavior! So what if Sophia doesn’t want any designer things? It honestly doesn’t matter!”

I didn’t want to hear anymore, so I crept back into my room and turned up All Time Low and fell asleep.

--

“Where’d Grandma go?”

“To her hotel. She’ll be leaving next week but she expects us to visit her everyday.”

“With Sophie?”

“Just us - you, me, and Dad.”

“Why not Soph? Why doesn’t Grandma like her?”

“Don’t wake Sophie, Ryan.”

“Why not?” I asked, sitting up from my bed. Ryan and Helena were standing in my doorway.

“Oh Sophie I’m so sorry. Did you catch any of that?” Helena asked.

I nodded, “Everything. But it’s ok. Go visit her. I’ll just go down to the beach or housesit or something.”

“Oh are you sure Sophie? We could have one of us stay with you while two leave,” Helena bit her lip.

“No, it’s completely ok. Just go. She’s your mother. I’m not even a blood relative Helena. Just go,” I insisted.

“Well… ok then Soph. We’ll be back at 3.”
