“Knock knock, can I come in?” Sophia asked, opening Ryan’s bedroom door.

“Stop,” Ryan said, stepping outside and closing the door behind him, not letting Sophia see what was inside.

“Ryan, what are you hiding from me?” Sophia asked curiously.

“Nothing… just, don’t come in.”

“…Ok? Um, well I was wondering if you wanted to hang out.”

“Hang out?”

“Yeah! We could go see a movie maybe! Or we could go to the mall.”

“No thank you.”

“Why not Ry?”

“I just don’t want to. I have to go now,” Ryan went back into his room.

What the hell is wrong with him? Sophia thought to herself. She walked downstairs to find Helena playing with Kyle.

“Oh, Sophia! I’m so glad you’re not out. Would you mind taking care of Kyle? Maybe take him to a park or something? I’ll pay you,” Helena asked.

“No! I mean, I wouldn’t mind at all! I’d love to! And please, I can’t ask you to pay me!”

“A-are you sure?” Helena asked hesitantly.

“Oh Helena, please! I think it’d be a treat to take Kyle to the park. He’s so adorable!” Sophia gushed.

“Ok, then,” Helena smiled, then gave Sophia easy directions to the nearest park, Bridgepoint Park.

“Kyle, listen to Mommy,” Helena grabbed Kyle’s suspenders, “sissy Sophia is going to take you to the park, ok Kyle? Doesn’t that sound like fun?”

Kyle nodded happily. I gladly took him by the hand and together we walked out the front door.

“So, Kyle. How’s life?” I ask.

“It’s good. Sophia, I have this girl in my daycare named Allie, and I like her. What should I do??” Kyle asked, looking down at his Transformers sneakers.

“Aw! Well you should tell her Kyle! What if she likes you back?” Sophia’s heart melted. It was just too adorable.

“Weally?” Kyle looked up at Sophia, who nodded.

“Okay!” Kyle started to skip the rest of the way.

--

Sophia and Kyle walked in the front door.

“Mommy, mommy! Sophia and I had so much fun today!!! Right Soph?! We swinged on the swings and slided down the slide! Soph also bought me a humongous chocolate ice cream cone! You know, the one that you never let me eat!! I like Soph! I love her I love her! Can we go again tomorrow?!” Kyle screamed.

“Oh Sophia, you bought him ice cream? How much?” Helena started taking out her wallet.

“Nope, you’re not giving me and money,” Sophia put her hand up.

“Come on, Soph! You promised you would see my Legos!” Kyle took her hand and led her up the stairs up to his room.

Kyle was really having fun, and he started screaming like an idiot.

“What’s going on?? Kyle!!!” Ryan barged into the room.

“Hi Ryan! I’m just showing Soph my Legos! I like her more than you, you never see my Legos!” Kyle stood up.

Ryan looked from Kyle to Sophia, “Well, I guess I’m just not as good as her, eh Pal?”

Kyle nodded. It’s so cute how children are always honest, so they’d insult you right in front of your face… but it’s not cute when they’re insulting you.

Ryan looked hurt. Then he straightened his face, put on a mean glare, and walked out the door.

“Soph, he scares me now,” Kyle said, crawling into Sophia's lap, “He used to be so much fun, he used to be like you! Only a boy, not a girl. He also doesn’t have cooties. But it’s ok, because you don’t have cooties either.”

“Well what happened to him, Kyle? What happed that made Ryan like this?” Sophia asked.

“I don’t know Soph. Ever since he was 13 years old I think that's what Momma to me say a long long long long long long time ago.”

13... Sophia was always older than Ryan by half an hour, they would celebrate their birthdays together. 13 was the age when Sophia sent her last letter to Ryan, and he never replied. Soph remembers it exactly, after writing and rewriting it a million times, it explained her true feelings about him.

Ryan,

How are you? I miss you so much! I can’t believe we didn’t celebrate our birthdays together!

So Ryan, this is going to be really hard to say: I think I may… love you. I don’t know! I mean, we’ve always been best friends, and we’d always played The Princess and Her Prince, where I was the princess and you were my prince. Maybe God had MADE  us do that for a reason. Maybe we belong together.

Ok, don’t think I’m a weirdo, I’m just thinking… you’ve always been my number one best friend, and you’ve always supported me, no matter what. If you don’t agree with me, please just leave this message alone. It was hard enough to write already.

-Soph
