Hange and I have Armin Arlert in our office first thing in the morning. I sit behind my desk, sipping my black tea to give me a reason to be awake so early. I objectively explain to him what was going on.
"We have testimony that Annie Leonhart has direct contact with Bertholdt Hoover, one of the men linked to the case and who are supposed to have diverted the factory's money".
Armin's eyes widen, surprised: "Are you sure?"
"Yes. Me and Y/N saw her talking to him close to the springs".
"If that's the case..."
Armin sits on the chair next to Hange, his forehead frowning in uneasiness. I spill some tea in an extra cup and give it to him to help him relax.
"I've been meaning to tell you, but wasn't sure if I was doing Annie right. At the time, I hoped it was just a coincidence".
"What is it?" Hange asks.
"We were almost at the factory's closing time. Mr. Smith had already left his office and went home, as well as both of you. I stayed behind at the reception to finish some paperwork. The lights were low, just a tall lamp by my table. After some minutes I heard noises on mr. Smith's office, which I was sure that I had locked up..."
"Well, don't keep us waiting!" Hange exclaims.
"Annie was there. I have no idea how she got in and what she was truly doing there. I went to the office and confronted her when I saw that it was her. Annie is the head of logistics so she gave me a reasonable excuse at the time.
Hange takes one of her notebooks and starts documenting his testimony.
"When was that?" I finally take place in the conversation.
"About three days ago".
"Do you know if Annie would have any drawing skills? Or just good handwriting ability?"
"Oh-" He thinks for a while, blushing right away. "I would say that...Well, she used to write me letters when we were younger. It was a long time ago, but she was good at calligraphy".
"Were they love letters?!" Hange asks.
"Not relevant to the case, Hange".
"Sorry, Levi. Also, sorry, Armin. You know I like some good drama".
"It's okay" Armin chuckles softly before frowning again. "So...What is going to happen to Annie?
"For now, all I need is for you to keep an eye on her. Don't act suspicious, just be alert".
"We are waiting for her to act. We believe she's the one who faked Erwin Smith's signatures" continues Hange. "If she's an accomplice and still around with Bertholdt, they must be planning on taking more money away".
Armin stares at my desk, his eyes saddening: "Do you think Annie could have helped kill those men?"
"We still can't prove it wasn't suicide" I say. "Don't be too startled yet".
He agrees with his head and takes a sip on the tea I offered. We all stay silent for a while, Hange finishing with her notes and me just thinking everything through. I do hope Armin Arlert is reliable.
But there's something else bugging me.
"Hange, why don't you take a walk?"
"Ah, no way, it's too hot outside-"
"Please, Hange, go somewhere else".
She pouts at me: "Jeez, if you don't want me here just say it. I'll be bugging Erwin Smith for a while, I've been meaning to make him my best friend so I can replace you, Levi. Maybe he'll give me a raise so I can buy Mikasa a present. You call me back if you need me".
