"Class is over, take care!"
My little students leave school happily. It's a hot spring day and they run to play in the park. I watch them through the window, enjoying the silence after class. I've been teaching over the last year, hoping it'd get me enough money to stop worrying my family.
After getting my bag full of books, I go for some ice cream in the central square. It has a small but cute bandstand in its center.
"Hey, Y/N!"
I run to my best friend, Sasha Braus. She's in her usual spot behind vegetables from her family's farm.
"Please let's go out after dinner" she says desperately. "Connie has the night shift and I'm so bored, I don't want to stay home".
Connie Springer has been postponing his wedding with Sasha since the factory incident. Being part of our town's police, he's been immersed in the case. Sasha has been taking it easy, once she's a bit scared to be wed so young. She's three years younger than me.
"I could use some night walk too".
"Can you get me some ice cream?" Sasha asks, biting one of the apples from her stand.
"Sure. I'll be right back".
I buy strawberry popsicles for both of us. When I get back to her, trying to not bump into the kids running around the square, she's already onto an orange. If I didn't know her since childhood, I could think she's with child.
Sasha lets go of the fruit and takes the ice cream.
"Ah! So good, so cold. I can't stand this weather. May be good for the farm, but sure ain't good for me".
"I don't mind it. We should go bathe in the springs on the weekend".
"Good idea".
We stand in silence, feeling a light breeze touching our faces and making the sun more bearable. A rent car passes in the street, stopping by the Hotel.
"Do you think it's the detective?" Sasha asks.
"I hope it is. This whole situation is unsettling me".
"Tell me about it. Father won't stop bugging Connie about the wedding".
"Oh, we both know he's taking advantage of this to let this engagement last as long as possible".
"Yes, we both know. And I like it." she smiles, dreamy. "Dating is good. I'm not ready to cook and clean for him when he gets home from the police department".
"He'd better cook for himself if he wants the chance of being fed".
I look at the clock near the bandstand.
"Anyway, I've got to get home and correct some homework. I'll see you for more ice cream at 8?"
"Will be there!"

"Welcome to Maria!"
We are greeted by some damn smiley blonde woman at the hotel. The city Maria is as small as it gets. There's only this hotel in here. Only one central square. Hange and I were the only ones leaving the train, especially since it was getting dark. At least, there was a car waiting for us.
"My name is Historia Reiss. May I get your reservations?"
"It's under Erwin Smith". Hange says.
The lady seems surprised, finally coming to understand who we were. The hotel isn't as bad as it could be. It's bright and looks new, probably was built when the factory was installed.
