"I'm sorry for listening, but I couldn't help it" I say, feeling ashamed with the three pairs of eyes staring at me, the intruder in the conversation.

"Y/N..." Levi begins to say, but stops midway.

"Levi, why wouldn't you tell me that? This is serious".

I feel somewhat betrayed. His family was in trouble and he didn't tell me, his wife to be.

"I didn't because he's always getting arrested. He's a stupid drunkyard and I don't want you having to deal with this".

"But it's your family, Levi. It'll soon be my family too. I feel like I should know stuff like this".

Isabel takes Levi's arm, pushing him closer to her, but he stops her before she can say anything: "I know, Isabel".

He frees himself and walks towards me, gently touching my back so we can leave the little room, too tiny for the four of us. "Y/N, let's sit downstairs".

I gently nod, although I feel completely restless. I follow him through the house and I hear the steps of Isabel and Farlan coming behind me. It's not really a conversation I'd like to share with them, but I say nothing about it.

Levi has me sit at the couch, while he stands up. Somehow I feel trapped, but I asked for this, so all I can do is finally listen to the answers to the questions I've been thinking since I met my fianceé.

"Y/N. Remember when I said I don't have a good background?"

I nod and whisper a simple: "Yes".

"Y/N. It ain't pretty".

At this point my stomach was hurting and I felt nauseous, not knowing what to expect anymore. "For God's sake, Levi, just tell me".

He finally sits down, feeling too vulnerable. Their brother and sister wait near the dining table, close enough to hear us, but giving us some space.

"It was only me and my mother when I was born. I don't know who my father is".

I wait, now patiently. I see in his eyes it takes a lot of him to talk about this.

"My mother was very poor. She didn't have a noble job".

I nod, reassuring him.

"She was a prostitute, Y/N".

My heart aches. I know she's probably not alive anymore. I can't even imagine what could've happened to her.

"Levi, I am so sorry..."

"There's more".

I stay put, leaving my need to go to him and comfort him somehow for later. I calm myself, staring at him lovingly, trying my best to give him confidence to trust me and say what else he has to say.

"My mother died of some disgusting disease he must have caught from a customer. My uncle, Kenny, found me and raised me. Actually, to put it clearly: he prevented me from dying. I was given food, clothes and a roof to sleep under, but he did nothing more. He's a drunkard and a gambler" Levi takes a breath. "That's the reason he's always getting in trouble with the police".

I understand now why he wouldn't tell me about this. He must feel so ashamed for his problematic uncle. I nod once again:

"I'm so sorry, Levi. I'm also sorry for pushing you to tell me about it, but..."

"There's more" he states, coldly.

His eyes stare at the coffee table in front of us, his glance never meeting mine again. I start to feel my heart racing. What else could there be? Somehow, even with his dark past, Levi got to be a notable detective, with a good home and friends...
