"Have you heard who's coming to town?" I hear my mother asking my father in the kitchen, while I set the table for dinner. "A detective. A real one, from the capital".

"What would someone from the capital do in here?" My father asks.

"To investigate the factory" I say, getting in the kitchen to carry plates to the dining room. "I suppose, since our small police department can't get a hold of what's going on there".

Our little town has been growing over the years thanks to this medicine factory that was installed here, over five years ago. But things got strange the last few months. So far, two people have died there, supposedly, both in an accident.

The deaths were two months apart. In the meantime, money has been missed through income records. This has directly affected our city, Maria, since that's where half the villagers work. People weren't getting paid. And that includes my father.

"This is inner work. Corruption. Someone from the board. Not gonna be solved until the powerful men decide they want to stop it".

We had stable finances and a good home. My sister just got married, but her husband also works at the factory. It may be just one month without decent payment, but I'm not seeing a brighter future.

I'm afraid my parents will give me to marry an old fart banker who has his eyes on me if things get worse. I'm already considered a spinster at 23 years old.

"So, word says this detective is coming to get the job done". Mother continues, full of hope. "They say he's the best at his job. His name is Levi Ackerman".

"This train is disgusting".

Hange doesn't even listen to me, a classic behavior. I get my coat and put it on the seat so my pants won't be ruined in this dusty cabin. My partner writes something furiously in her notebook.

"I've got everything we need for this case. Employer's name, which consists of half the village. Their associations as well."

"I don't want to hear it". I say firmly. "We'll get this done when we're there".

I take out a novel and put on my reading glasses, not wanting to be bothered by work. But Hange's got other intentions.

"Don't you think it's exciting to be on a train? Going to a small village? Do you think they have cars in there? Will the ladies be pretty?"

"I'm sure they already have cars there. It's a small town, not the countryside. If it was, I wouldn't go".

"Hope I'll find a wife there. It would do you good too".

"Tch".

Hange has been all over the topic of marriage because she's passed her 30's. I'm also that age, but marriage ain't in my plans. I don't want some annoying wife with some damn strong perfume and expensive jewelry. Sounds overestimated.

I just want enough money to retire and stay silent until I'm dead.

"Meeting new people it's exciting" she says.

People are disgusting. Especially the new ones.

"Just want to get this over with and get paid by that factory owner or something".

"Erwin Smith". She corrects me.

"Sounds rich enough".
