Chapter Sixteen - How can you mend a broken heart

I'm just back from the school and from my daily chit chat with Sasha at the square when I hear the bell ringing.

I get the door, smiling because I assume it's Levi who came earlier than we agreed to meet or my father coming back from the factory. But when I open it, my smile fades away.

"Y/N. It's been so long" Eren says.

It's been two days since I asked Armin to spy on Annie. She hasn't been around the reception or offices, so maybe her accidental meeting with Armin at Erwin's office scared her off. We'll have to wait a bit longer to see if she'll act again.

I got to the hotel a bit earlier, now that all paperwork was seen through. Now me and Hange may have to interview some workers about their schedules and what they know about Annie Leonhart. From what I've heard, she's mostly reserved and never had many friends in town. All of that just makes her more suspicious.

I drive my way through the streets, making a turn on Y/N's house. Not because I'm a stalker, but because it's on my way to the hotel. Not that I would mind seeing her for a bit, but we already see each other every night and I don't want to bother her that much.

But I can't help taking a peek at her house, just out of curiosity. Someone is at her door. It's a tall man, much taller and younger than me. He has bright emerald eyes and looks like a happy motherfucker.

Y/N opens the door and her expression says everything. My heart drops. That man must be Eren Jaeger.

"Eren..."

I have no words. I had no idea he was coming back. He looks at me, much taller than he was six years ago. His emerald eyes give me a hint that he may be waiting for something. For a hug or worse, a kiss.

"What are you doing here?'

"Can I come in?"

I step back, letting him in, the words paralyzed in my mind. I try to retrieve my thoughts, but it's all blank. All I can do at first is to stare at him, taking in his new look. He has grown so much. Eren finally looks like the independent man he always wanted to be. He smiles at me nervously, waiting for any type of response from me.

"How have you been?" He begins to say.

"Why are you back? I didn't know you were coming back".

"I thought about writing to you, but I know from experience you'd never answer it".

"Oh, really? I can't imagine why I would do that".

"Y/N, please, I've just stepped in here and you want to fight?"

"Were you expecting anything else?"

I can't get myself to invite him to sit down. We both just stand in the living room. I want to end this and have him go away.

"You know I left because your parents would never give you permission to come-"

"So you decided to disappear on me, right after our first night together!"

My voice echoes from the house. Luckily, my father is still at work and my mother went out to visit a friend. The only person who knows about this is Sasha. I didn't even tell my sister or Armin about it.

"I was young, Y/N! I know how much of an idiot I was now. I can't take what I did back, but I'm here asking you what I can do to make things right".
