It had been a week since I had been playing with the other boys.
Obviously I wasn't playing for fun but I did end out having fun some of the time.
"Benny, this pop ain't doin it for me I'm roasting like a marshmallow" porter said.
"Nah man come on you can't be that hot."
"Benny please don't make us play today."
"What do you suggest we do instead?"
I stayed quiet.
Everyone's eyes lit up.
"Pool!" They all shouted together.
"Fine. Whatever." Rodriguez put his hand on my shoulder.
"Meet outside the pool in about 20 minutes."
Everyone started running home to grab their swim suits.
Everyone except me.
Rodriguez started jogging but stopped when he noticed that I wasn't running.
"You coming?"
"Nah I don't do water."
"C'mon man you gotta come."
If Rodriguez found out I was a girl he would kick me off the team in 3 seconds flat.
"Nah. I'm good."
"Wendy Peffercorn is the life guard." Rodriguez gave a smirk.
"It don't matter. Water isn't my thing."
Rodriguez rolled his eyes and licked his lips.
"Your loss."
"I guess that makes it your win."
Benny rolled his eyes.
"What are you gunna do instead?"
"Probably go get ice cream."
Rodriguez again licked his lips and sighed.
"I don't wanna leave you outta anything. I'll come with you."
"Nah rod- Benny. It's cool."
"What did you just call me?"
"Nothin' it's cool you ain't gotta come if you don't want."
"But what if I do wanna come?"
"Then you gotta tell the idiots you ain't coming."
"Idiots? Is that what you call us?"
"Yup."
"Alright, I'll tell em, when you wanna meet at the ice cream place."
"Let's d0 25 minutes."
"Alright." Rodriguez then started jogging out the sandlot.
I did want to go to the pool.
Maybe not with them but I did want to go.
(I know squints gets kicked from the pool I just don't wanna have to make a big thing for it)
I walked out of the sandlot.
I had to fix my hair before I met up with...Rodriguez.
I pulled off my hat and took my hair out of my pony tail.
(Unless it's really short)
I put it back in a pony tail and peaked out the few strands of hair to make me look like a guy.
I got to the ice cream place and went in.
Rodriguez was already waiting.
"Hey Matthew."
"Hey...Benny."
It was awkward just talking to Rodriguez...and it made me feel weird.
"What's your favorite kind?"
"Strawberry."
"Strawberry? Are you kidding? Who likes strawberry?" Benny laughed.
"Whatever man, what's your favorite?"
"Chocolate."
I rolled my eyes.
Me and Rodriguez sat down at the table.
A blond girl came over to take out order and was staring at Rodriguez the whole time. Just like I wasn't even there!
"One chocolate and one strawberry ice cream."
"Ok, I'll be back with them in a minute..." she said smiling.
She left and went into the back.
"She was weird."
"She just had a little crush on you "
"No way!"
"I think she did."
Rodriguez rolled his eyes.
"I never thought you guys were actually good at baseball."
"We've played ever since I moved here."
"Really? How long ago was that?"
"3 years."
"You guys have been playing for that long?"
"Yea, and In the winter we always go there and have snowball fights!"
"That sounds...fun..."
It did...it was something I had never done before, mainly because my mom would make me bake cookies or help her with any small task.
"It is last year was the first year with Smalls."
"Really?"
"Yea he was actually really good at throwing the snowballs."
"Well your a baseball team, Snowballs shouldn't be that hard to throw!"
"Hey...here are your ice creams..."
She slid one over to me and handed Rodriguez's to him.
"Uhm. Thank you.."
"Here's a napkin."
We already had napkins at the table and nobody uses napkins for ice cream anyway. She had written her address on the napkin.
She walked away once more.
"Dang blondies desperate."
Benny smiled.
Benny... Rodriguez was too formal especially when he considered me to be his friend.
Deep down inside... I guess I considered him to be my friend too.
