20-Only a State Away.

(Y/n POV)

Sometimes I wondered about how Benny was, if he had found another girl, if he still cared about me. I usually just shut myself up by telling myself he made the promise, they all promised I was irreplaceable.

Irreplaceable, yeah, sure.

"So after the mall, I was thinking we could go to the movies and after that I thought that we could-" Layla was talking fast, I didn't like when she did that.

"Layla, calm down." I said looking up from my homework.

"Sorry! Are you almost done with that?" She looked over my shoulder.

"No, can you stop talking, I really need to concentrate."

As soon as the words left my mouth I knew I had messed up, I knew I had said something I regretted.

"Oh...yeah...I'll be in Chris's room I guess..." she opened the door and walked out.

Shit.

Layla had become one of my best friends but she was fragile, anything could hurt her feelings.

I decided to focus on my homework and not whatever her and Chris were doing in his room.

Layla and Chris had become and official thing after they ended out in the same class, right next to each other.

I tried to focus on my homework trying not to think about anything else.

I stared at DeNunez, keeping my eye on the ball.

As soon as DeNunez pitched the ball I got a tap on my shoulder and missed the ball.

"Ham I swear to god!" I turned around to see
Mr. Smalls.

"O-oh hi sir!" I nervously rubbed the back of my neck.

"Hello Benny. Here's the deal, we have 10 people and we can only have 9, someone needs to go." He looked at me with a chart.

"What? We can't get rid of someone on the team!"

"Sorry Benny, you have to make a cut since I'm making you the team captain." He gave me the chart.

"Benny everything good?" Ham asked with everyone now around me and Mr. Smalls.

"No! Everything is not good, we need to cut someone."

"Yea? Smalls already said he would do it." Squints said looking over my shoulder.

"We can't cut smalls! We can't cut anyone!" I said giving back the clipboard.

"Listen, if you cut Scotty I'll make sure he ends out the water boy."

"Benny it's alright, I'm the worst player anyway." Smalls put a hand on my shoulder.

"This is so stupid! Why are we even still trying to do this? None of us still want to see y/n do we?" I said looking around the everyone's face.

"Benny you don't want to see her?" Smalls took his hand off my shoulder and backed up.

"Honestly? No. I don't." I looked at Julie.

"Benny, we thought you still cared about y/n..." Squints said looking out the top of his glasses.

"Yeah yeah! You always said you would care about her now suddenly she doesn't matter?" Yeah-yeah got closer to me.

"No- I didn't say that! Your twisting my words!"

"Are we Benny? Or did you just make fake promises?" DeNunez stood behind yeah-yeah.

"Listen! This is stupid! Besides who here really wants to see y/n again?!" I said looking around to see who would raise their hand.

To my surprise, they all did, even Julie...

"Just because she's been gone for a while doesn't mean she doesn't wanna see us or that we don't wanna see her!" Yeah-yeah looked at me shaking his head.

"Come on guys, let's go play somewhere else." Yeah-yeah said turning around and starting to walk out the sandlot.

The rest of the boys followed him, I couldn't believe it!

"You know Benny, I'm not asking for you to forget
y/n, I just...never mind." Julie then began to run after the boys.

There I was, all my friends had left me, like I was an old glove none of us wanted, I looked at the ground and tried to hold my tears back.

"So uh Benny, is Scotty going to be the water boy?" Mr. Smalls asked me.

I shook my head yes and continued to look at the ground.

I watched as eventually Mr.Smalls left, I was all alone.

"Princess." I mumbled.

"I don't know what to think...you left me here, all alone, and I'm supposed to move on..?"

I spoke as if she could hear me, I knew she couldn't , I knew she was probably off hanging out with her new friends, I just wished she was here, she always seemed to make everything simple.

"Julies great and all but... if I had to choose I would still choose you...the way you made me feel, like I was walking on air. Nobody's ever made me feel that way..."

"I love you princess, I can't leave you behind."

Just then a newspaper had blown right to my feet, as if almost perfect timing.

When I read the title I almost threw up.

'First girl on the team! Y/n Phillips!'

I looked closer at the picture to see y/n, her beautiful smile, her pretty face, my princess was right here!

I wondered how a Colorado newspaper got into the sandlot but I took it as fate.

I ran to the tree house where they all were and quickly jumped up.

"Benny come on-" yeah yeah said as I interrupted him.

"Read the title."

Yeah yeah rolled his eyes and read the paper.

"'First girl on the team! Y/n Phillips?!'" He looked at the picture and smiled.

"She's there!" He pointed her out to everyone else.

I looked at Julie and she was smiling at me.

I looked back down to the boys who's smiles were all the biggest they had been in a long time.

"Wait we just need to get to state championship to see her?!" DeNunez asked me.

"Yea!"

"That'll be easy!" Squints set back into his chair.

Julie came over to me and sat next to me, she had a small smile on her face.

"You know, I didn't expect you to get over her, honestly I didn't want you to." She said quietly

I just looked at her.

"This is going to sound really weird but, I don't think I ever stopped having a crush on her, even when I found out she wasn't a guy."

My eyes got wide, Julie had just told me she had a crush on y/n?? Y/n was a girl and Julie was a girl, I thought it was a little weird, I had never even heard of something like that happening!

"You mean you liked her as her?" I asked.

Julie looked embarrassed.

"Yeah..."

A/n-

I would like to say that being lgbtq wasn't really a thing you told people back in the 60s if that makes sense, BUT I didn't want to make Julie a character who everyone hated so I had to do something that would make her seem like a good character.
