One Month Later
After waiting very impatiently, we finally got to find out the gender of the baby. We decided to do something fun with just the kids. I wanted them to feel involved in the process. So, we were all gathered around the kitchen table with four cupcakes in the middle. Each was filled with either blue or pink icing depending on if it's a boy or a girl. "Okay, everyone grab a cupcake. On the count of three, we all take a big bite, okay?" I asked. Melody and Will both nodded their heads as they each grabbed a cupcake. Reid took my hand once he had his in his hand.
Altogether we counted down and all took a bite. All of us looked down at our cupcakes to confirm they were filled with pink icing. "A girl!" Melody cheered, "I'm going to have a baby sister!"
Reid's arms came around me as he picked me up in an excited hug, spinning me around as he laughed. "We're having a girl!" He placed me down giving me a kiss that tasted of vanilla cupcakes.
"I'm going to be the only boy." Will crossed his arms with a pout.
I stepped out of Reid's arm to kneel in front of him. I was glad I hadn't gotten too large to do this yet. "You're not going to be the only boy, you've got you're dad, all your uncles, and your cousin Osiris, not to mention my friend Tessa is having a boy. There are lots of boys in our family."
"But I want a little brother."
"I know, but we don't get to choose these things. They just happen. You and Melody get to teach her all about your favourite toys and superheroes. Not to mention how to play all your favourite games. It doesn't matter if you get a brother or a sister, all that matters is that you are going to be the best big brother ever."
I could see the frown start to disappear off his face. "Okay, but I'm still would like a baby brother next time."
I laughed, "Let's wait until your sister is born before we talk about next time."
We finished our cupcakes and played together a bit before bedtime. Once the kids were in bed, Reid and I cuddled up on the couch. He had the most content look on his face as we sat there quietly. "A little girl. Have you been thinking of names?"
"Well, I do have a few ideas." I said.
"What is it?"
"Well, I would like to name her after my Grandma Jean. She was the one who taught me the piano. That's actually her piano, she left it to me when she passed." I gestured to my upright piano, remembering when we used to play together when I was a kid, "I always wanted to name my daughter after her, but things didn't work out with Melody."
"I like it. We could call her Little Jeannie."
"I would like it if we could name her after someone from your family too. Maybe Sarah or Rebecca? We could call her Rebecca Jean or Sarah Jean. Or if there is another name you were thinking of. I just want her name to come from both of us, you know?"
He leaned down, pressing his lips to mine in a soft kiss before he pulled away. "I like Rebecca Jean. You know what would sound even better though?"
"What's your idea?"
"Olive Madelyn Wilson."
I looked up at him in confusion when I noticed what he'd pulled out. An engagement ring. "Oh my god!"
He slid off the couch and got onto one knee, "Olive, I've been carrying this around for a few weeks just trying to find the right time. I kept telling myself it was too soon, but I don't care. You are exactly what I've been looking for my entire life. I've chased the dream of someone perfect across the globe, little did I know you were waiting for me back home. I love you so much Olive. Will you please do me the honour of marrying me?"
