Ivy had been running for ages. It was dark, the sun had set hours ago. The only light she had to guide her way was the full moon above her, and a few flickering streetlights.
She was beyond tired. The crisp bite of the cold air pained her lungs as she took exhausting breaths to fuel her escape.
For once couldn't she rest without fear coiling through her bones?
For a mere second, could she stay in one place, make a life for herself?
A stream of light shot towards her, nearly missing her head. Ivy pulled her wand from its concealed position in her jacket and looked over her shoulder.
Two assailants were chasing her down in the soulless night-kissed town.
She plunged into an alley, hoping to lose her attackers. Her footsteps thundered as she pumped her arms. Her heart stopped as she noticed she was running out of room.
She knew her luck had run out as she had chosen one with a dead end. Ivy's eyes darted around frantically looking for a way out. Her hands collided with doorknobs on either side, trying her best to yank the locked doors open.
For goodness sake she was only fourteen. She had been on her own since the ripe age of eleven. Learning as she went, and using whatever knowledge her family had left her.
"Nowhere to run now girl!" The taller one bellowed, his gravely voice ricocheting off the moist brick of the two neighboring buildings.
Ivy continued to retreat up until her back crashed into the wall that separated her from her freedom. Her heart thundered in her chest, her breaths came out in pants as she tried to force oxygen into her lungs.
Their wands were pointed at Ivy, ready to take her down by any means necessary. They kept their hoods over their heads to hide their faces from her, a sliver of terror ran down her spine.
This couldn't be the end.
She had fought so hard, her family had died so that she could live.
"What do you want from me?" Ivy nearly cried out. She tried her best to keep her wand out of their sight, hoping there would be a chance she could use it to escape.
"Personally, I'd like to kill you." The shorter one spoke, surprising Ivy to hear a woman's voice. "But he wants you."
Believe it or not, this was the most information Ivy had gotten out of any assailant so far. All she knew was that her and her family had been on the run ever since she was born. Ivy quickly learned that someone had it out for them, but her parents never told her why.
"Who?!" Ivy begged. Her hand shifted slightly, turning the point of her wand towards the two attackers.
They said nothing as they slowly advanced, meaning to catch her rather than kill.
And that knowledge had Ivy holding back tears. She would rather die than be taken by the people she had been running from her whole life.
"Duro." She whispered, flicking her wand at the woman, remembering the spells her family had her practicing relentlessly.
Ivy cringed at the sound of hardening skin, her opponent slowly turning to stone. The man beside her paused in confusion, unsure of why his partner had halted their pursuit. And why her skin had begun to turn grey.
Ivy could feel his shock as he watched his partner slowly grow stiff, the woman now turned into a statue. Her body frozen, her wand reaching out towards Ivy.
