Summary: Despite having cosmic power at his fingertips... Douxie is kind of a kluts. Or one time being clumsy saved his life."You know" Douxie began as he picked up his books from the crippled table of the diner he was seated at, "for a being who can turn into anything, you're rather unhelpful."
With the heavy books wrapped up safely in his arms Douxie turned his head to shoot a meaningful glance at Arch."Well, being seen with a fury human who has a glowing chest may give you a bit of a reputation." He said, his tone betraying his true tiredness. The two companions have been taking advantage of Douxie's second job - after seeing a freaky creature they haven't seen before.
Douxie scooped up all of the mythical creature manuals he could find (including fairytales) and found that Imps do in fact live in Arcadia as well. The familiar had suggested the two used Douxie's closing shift at the cafe to study up on these beings and Douxie reluctantly agreed, carrying those books did not seem like a great Friday night activity.
It now being 11pm and Archie causing chains of yawns, the two friends decided it was time to get some rest.
As they stepped out into the autumn chill, Douxie shrugged, "They have seen worse" he said with a grin, "but that would be a new sight to see, even for me" Douxie chuckled and balanced the books on one knee as he grappled for the keys in his back pocket.
He knew this probably wasn't a great idea considering his track record, but it seem like a better alternative to placing them on the wet ground from the rain earlier that night. The books stayed precariously balanced on his knee as he skilfully locked the door to the cafe.
He hastily put his keys away and grabbed the books properly. As the two strolled down the street towards the library, they were ready to collapse along the musky sofa which faces the crackling fireplace.
They stayed in a comfortable silence for the short trip down the road to the mysterious library, Douxie once again tried his luck with the valence technique but the books began to wobble and with a smirking Archie behind him, Douxie toppled the books onto the damp concrete.
"Oh wipe that smug look off your face" Douxie sighed and began picking up his books, the grainy concrete sending chills down his spine as the cold water slowly began seeping through his dark jeans to his skin.
Archie, now stood on two legs, fixed his glasses and walked over to a grumbling Douxie. "For your information," Archie reached into Douxie's back pocket and pulled out the keys to the library, "you could have asked me to unlock the door" Archie swept his gaze towards the now damp books, "and saved a lot of information in doing so."
Douxie now with books in hand, mimicked Archie and strode into the dark, cold room. Douxie placed the books down on a slightly rusted, rickety coffee table and sat heavily on the sofa. Archie flew to Douxie's feet and blew a plume of fire into the fireplace setting the wood alight.
"Com'ere" Douxie gestured, arms open, and Archie jumped happily onto the lap of his centuries old friend. Douxie's eyes began to feel heavy, with the faint smell of rain and smoke flooding his brain Douxie quickly drifted to sleep.
As fast as the desperate sleep came it was taken from him by an obnoxious knocking at the library door. Douxie glanced at the clock on the mantle, illuminated by the faint light of dawn, to see that it was 6am. With a rub of his eyes Douxie stretched and stumbled across the room to the heavy wooden door.
The knock sounded again this time accompanied by a voice, "Hello? I need to speak with..." the voice trailed off as Douxie opened the door to find a boy. "Oh, hello heh, um I'm looking to speak to a..." the boy glanced at his hand, "Dou-xee, Douxie?" The boy had a thick accent that sounded smooth like the drip of honey or almost comforting like the feeling of a warm drink on a cold winter morning... No, Douxie hastily shook those thoughts from his mind and redirected his attention to the matter at hand.
"Uhh... that would be me," Douxie spoke with the croak of the early morning, he cleared his voice. "What can I do for you?" He asked with the best smile he could offer at 6 in the morning.
"I was told by Toby to come and show you this," the boy held out his hand and held up a long brown feather, as the feather caught the light, the young wizard could see a slight gold shimmer to each silky strand. Douxie's jaw almost dropped as he recognised the origin of this mystery feather.
Douxie grabbed a hold of the boys wrist and pulled him inside the library, "where on earth did you find that?" He said slightly confused.
"I found it behind moth- ah" the boy cut his sentence short but quickly continued, "behind my house!" he said a little too enthusiastically, this sparked confusion.
"Who are you again? I don't think I caught your name" Douxie said, the feather clasped in the others hand completely forgotten.
"Oh uhm," the boy cast his eyes to the ground nervously, his hand absently reaching the back of his neck, scratching through the silence, "my name is Krel."
"Cool name, where are you from?" He asked, Douxie moved through the room and climbed a ladder to a higher section of the book case. He flicked through the leather bound books still waiting for a response.
"I'm from Cantaloupia," Krel's voice wavered as he answered. Having found the book he was looking for, Douxie just shrugged off the suspicious behaviour, more fascinated in the golden feather.
On his way down the ladder Douxie - being Douxie - slipped and lost hold of the heavy book in his hand. With a yelp, Archie was rudely awoken to a thunderous crash as the book hit the floor. The deafening silence slipped into what seemed like eons as no one dared to shatter the unnerving quite. Douxie began climbing down the tall, dark wood ladder.
The ladder squeaked with every step but unlike the others one bar wavered unusually low, the splintering sound came first, the yelp escaping Douxie's mouth came second. The wind rushed past Douxie's ears as he plummeted to the earth.
Then... nothing?
Douxie, who had his eyes scrunched tight expecting to hit the floor and possibly break something. As his soul slowly returned to his body he quickly realised he was engulfed in the warm embrace of four arms. Douxie, feeling very confused, cracked an eye open and saw a beautiful sight.
Krel who was previously a Latino boy two inches shorter then him was now a gorgeous glowing... being? Douxie felt completely safe and grounded in this strangers arms, he slowly pulled away and took a step back.
Douxie was... mildly surprised. He steadied his breathing and began making circles around Krel, poking, pulling, and pinching Krel's glowing skin.
"So... Cantaloupia?" Douxie asked quietly as he lifted one of Krel's arms to inspect the upper limbs.
"Uhh yeah I guess so" Krel said in a nervous tone.
"I tell you what. You tell me about yourself and I'll tell you about this creature, agreed?" Douxie bargained.
"Uhh..." Krel paused, he watched as the familiar stalked his way towards the two. Archie planted himself at Krel's feet, looking up into the boys eyes.
"If I were you I'd take a seat" Archie suggested in his suggestive tone of voice. Krel visibly jumped.
"I really hope the cat AAARRRGGHH, ate yesterday couldn't talk" Krel said as Douxie chuckled and lead him over to the old worn out sofas.
