Footsteps pound against the carpeted floors. Heart racing, hands shaking, eyes glazing over with tears. Liam couldn't seem to run fast enough. The halls weren't too crowded, allowing him to easily maneuver around students clutching large books and laptops to their chest. Chris's words stuck inside of his mind, 'what do you want to say to him?'
What did Liam want to say to Matthew? That he liked him? That he had quite possibly liked him since they started high school? That Liam was too focused on getting with a girl because he didn't want to ruin their friendship? He had so much he wanted to say, but didn't know how to put it into words.
Coming to a stop, almost falling to the floor, Liam opens the room's door. It's dark inside, just like it had been last night and this morning, a lump, Matthew, hidden underneath the many covers on his bed.
Liam flicks on the light, kicking off his shoes. "Matthew, we need to talk." He says, opening up the curtains to let the light in.
Matthew doesn't respond, doesn't even move as though he were asleep, but Liam knows better than to believe it. "Matthew, please. We can't not talk to each other."
"Go away." Matthew replies, muffled by the blankets. "Just leave me alone."
"That's not happening."
Stepping forward, Liam takes a seat on the edge of the bed, tucking his face into his hands. "I'm sorry." Whispers Liam, clearing his throat to stop himself from breaking down into sobs. "I'm sorry I didn't kiss you back.. I.. I was shocked."
No response is given, but Liam feels the blankets move slightly.
"I.." the words trail off out of Liam's mouth and he groans angrily. "Fuck, why is this so hard? There's so much I want to say to you."
Still nothing.
Sucking in a deep breath, Liam shakes out his hands, sniffling. "We've been friends since we were five, Matthew.. Thirteen years of friendship and I know if I don't say this now, that will all disappear."
Slowly, Matthew pokes his head out from under the covers, keeping his face out of sight. He fidgets with his hands, and Liam knows he was thinking the worst. Reaching out, Liam places his hand over top of Matthew's, rubbing his thumb gently over his knuckles.
"I have feelings for you, Matthew.. I think I have since we started high school." voices Liam, cupping Matthew's cheek and lifting his head so that their gazes were locked. "I know I did.. I.. I was so confused, because I knew I liked girls, of course I did. But then.. Every time I looked at you, I wanted to kiss you and hold your hand, but I didn't think you felt the same so I pushed it away. I pushed you away."
"Liam," whispers Matthew, taking hold of his wrist, tears in his eyes.
Liam smiles softly. "I'm so sorry, Matthew."
Shaking his head, Matthew wraps his arms around Liam's neck, pulling him into an embrace. "No, I'm sorry.. I'm sorry for running away this morning, I was so scared.."
"It's okay." Liam assures, breaking away and resting their foreheads together, a silent promise. "I.. I really like you, Matthew. I think.." Liam pauses. Should he say it? Was it too soon? "I love you, Matthew. I love you."
Matthew doesn't say anything, gasping, breath hitching, and Liam pulls away, cupping his cheek. Tears fall down Matthew's cheeks, a shaky smile on his lips. "I.. I love you too."
Leaning forward slowly, Liam brushes their noses together, lips mere inches apart. Matthew drifts forward, breath fanning over Liam's face, and their lips fall together, soft, sweet and absolutely perfect.
Liam pulls Matthew in by his waist, pulls him into his lap, into his arms. Matthew smiles against their lips, draping his arms over Liam's shoulders, playing with the hairs on the nape of his neck. Everything felt perfect, felt whole again. Their lips together, bodies flush, makes both boys' hearts pound. It was all they could have ever hoped for and more.
It takes them ages to pull away, desperate for the moment to never end, Liam cuddled against Matthew's chest, arms around his waist, body between his thighs. Matthew massages his fingers through Liam's fluffy hair, holding onto him tightly, scared that if he did, Liam would disappear.
"Can we stay like this forever?" Mumbles Liam, kissing Matthew's clothed chest.
A smile spreads itself across Matthew's lips, along with a small giggle from his lips. "As much as I would love you, we have to go to dinner soon."
Liam groans, displeased. "Why." He whines.
"Because, you get cranky when you're hungry."
"I do not."
"Yes you do. Remember when you didn't have breakfast that one morning in sophomore year?"
Liam sighs. "Fine."
