Chapter 12 - Inner Demons

Faith's POV

My mind refused to process the truth of the person lying there, on the ground before me.

I hardly found it easy to grasp the conceptual facts laid before me.

How... how could this be possible?

Her end statement was lingering within the confines my mind with what I was trying my best to ignore. To forget.

"Cierra Ronman." I heard one of them whisper behind me.

...Up.

"Ronman" another repeated.

... Shut up.

"... meaning HIS daughter?!"

My thought violently surfaced in an authorative cry, as my body went into an all-too-familiar state of shock.

"SHUT UP!!"

Howver, the order did not apply to the voices clouding my mind, pushing me to the edge of delirium.

How could you not realise she was his blood?

We had all showered up after cleaning the slaughter house, for the comfort of any survivors... after all, I wanted them all to still feel relatively at home when they returned. Our scents were palpable thereafter.

However, now that I recall, she was still covered in blood when we left, refusing to shower before leaving... it was the reason she was able to cleverly evade my sense of smell for so long. If she had rid herself of her shield of odours, I would have been able to clearly identify her soiled heritage.

Maybe that's why she hid herself... so she wouldn't have to face the same punishment as her father.

But how could she even think that I would such a thing to an innocent?

Well, she did witness your wrath up close and personally.

She witnessed your rage consume you first hand as you devoured her father.

I would have never done that to her.

Would you have not?

NO!

How can you be so sure?

Grasping my ears for comfort, I tried to silence the demons raving in my mind.

You should have killed her when you first met.

No, I'm not a murderer.

How could I hurt such a fragile looking thing?

How could I bring myself to hurt this girl, after all she had been through?

We were travelling with the daughter of the man responsible for causing all this?!

How could we not realise who she was?

But then again, it all makes more sense now.

FLASHBACK

Silent tears streaked down her face as Ronman's wailing grew louder, along with his screams and pleas for forgiveness... Her firm grip on his shoulders did not loosen though – it tightened with every cry.

She dutifully kept him in position as I proceeded with the ritual branding.

She just stood there, rigid – her face only centimetres away from mine but her eyes cast downwards, her fringe becoming a wall to her emotions... but her eyes were locked downwards, coming face to face with the shimmering, twin orbs of the traitor.

By the look of deep desperation he was glancing up straight into the eyes of his limiter, he must have held high hopes for mercy from the limbs that meticulously bound him to submission.

FLASHBACK OVER

At the time, I thought that it may have been droplets of perspiration dripping from her forehead from the strain and the heat from the burning torch.

She must have really hated her father to let me perform such grievous bodily harm in her presence, to just watch quietly as I forcefully broke him piece by piece.

What must she have gone through to have the heart to do such a thing... to the man who helped her become who she is..?

You should have killed her when you first met.

You are worthless... a powerless Alpha... just a weak little girl...
