The leaves of Liyue's trees swayed in the air's breeze as the birds sang their melody. The atmosphere felt almost ethereal; no loud citizens, light winds blowing, animals running around carefree... the night was close to perfect.
Your sundress' bottom billowed out from the wind's current as you trudged up a steep mountain. At the peak awaited your life long friend, Xiao, a forever living being.
A heavy breath heaved out of you. The rocks began to get sharper and steeper. You held onto your wide brim hat and picnic basket as you started to climb upwards.
Finally reaching the mountain's peak, Xiao's dark teal hair came into view. A smile adorned your face as you used the remaining bit of stamina you had left to reach him. "Xiao!"
Xiao turned around and his eyes met with a disheveled you. "Did you fall down the mountain or something?" Xiao asked, cocking a brow and crossing his arms.
"Haha, very funny, Xiao. You'll be laughing when you get none of the almond tofu I prepared," you huffed, furrowing your brows. In response, Xiao rolled his eyes, hiding his small smile.
You took out two containers of food and two cups. Both you and Xiao visited this location often, so there was a tiny area to cook or what not. You lit up the fire with your pyro vision and began to brew some tea for the two of you. As the tea was brewing, you and your close friend conversed with one another. When it was finished, you poured the tea into the cups. The two of you began to enjoy a meal with each other's company.
After some time passed, you parted your lips to speak. "Xiao, may I ask you something?"
Xiao looked over to you, his amber eyes staring into your (E/C) ones. "Okay, go ahead. I'm listening."
"This is possibly personal, so don't answer if you don't please," you paused to take a deep breath. "What is it like to be immortal?"
The question struck Xiao by surprise. Never before in your four years of friendship did you ever mention his immortality. "Well, honestly, immortality is unbearable. Every passing year I watch more and more of my acquaintances pass on. For that very reason, I don't befriend mortals. Well, with the exception of you."
Your eyes were glazed over with sympathy. Suddenly, you pulled Xiao into your arms to give him a warm embrace. Your delicate fingers ran through his slightly tangled locks. Xiao, not knowing how to respond, leaned into your touch. Not long after, Xiao's eyes watered. Tears ran down his face as you shushed him, telling him it's already and whispering sweet nothings to him. After some time, the two of you noticed how late it grew. Xiao decided to escort you back to your abode, for it was dangerous at this hour.
After descending down the cliff, you and Xiao followed the path back to Qingce Village, both of your polearms handy in case anything disturbed both of you. You both encountered a gang of treasure hoarders in the bamboo forest, fending them off with ease. What was unexpected was a few agents of the Fatui working alongside the pick-pocketers. The agility of the agent was too quick for you to dodge, causing you to be met with a blade to your stomach. Xiao cried out, quickly dashing towards the agent.
"Prepare to die, fool!" Xiao took his polearm and stabbed it through the agent. After all the evil was dispersed, he ran over to your aid. Thankfully, you were still breathing. Crimson coloured blood seeped through your dress, staining the white, silk fabric.
"Xiao, I'm sorry, I don't think I'll get out of this predicament. Please, don't forget about me," you choked out, pain lacing your words.
"No, shut up, (Y/N)! You're gonna make this! The village is just up ahead!" Xiao picked up your body bridal style and ran as fast as he could towards the village, crying out for help.
He reached the village's entrance and spotted the village elder, Granny Rouxin. The shock on her face was apparent when she saw the great Adeptus Xiao cradling her granddaughter.
Tears streamed down Xiao's face. Countless lives were lost at his hands, and yours was now being added. He sobbed into your shoulder, pleading for you to stay.
You lifted your fail hand to touch Xiao's cheek, wiping away his tears. "Xiao, don't think of this as a goodbye. Think of this as a "see you again"," you gave a weak smile as Xiao gritted his teeth, pushing aside some of the hair on your face.
"Please, I don't want to lose you too," Xiao hiccuped out, whimpering. Not only was his best friend clinging onto life at the current moment, but also the person he grew to love romantically.
Although Xiao knew how an immortal falling for a mere human was taboo, the feeling of butterflies in his stomach never seemed to seize.
Feeling you go limp in his arms, Xiao's screams rang throughout the village. He knew he could never forget you. The guilt of knowing he has protected a whole nation for many centuries yet he couldn't protect you was eating him alive. Knowing he'd have to live an eternity without you by his side made his heart ache. Thoughts of "maybe if I didn't", "maybe I should've done", and "I could've" swarmed his mind.

23 years have passed since that day. Xiao went to a gigantic tree near Mount Hulao, the mountain you visited all those years ago. A small, eroded tomb laid under the shady leaves. Xiao placed down some qingxin flowers on your grave.
"It's been a while since we've seen each other, hasn't it?" Xiao laid down beside your tomb, the grass prickling at his back. He folded his hands together and set them on his chest, turning his head to face where your headstone was. "I miss you so much, (Y/N). I wish I could've told you how much you meant to me."
Xiao's eyes filled with tears, but he swiftly wiped them away. "I love you, (Y/N). Happy birthday." Drowsiness hit Xiao as he started to close his eyes.
Forever in love, their hearts aglow. You and Xiao laid under a shady tree, only now you lay six feet below.
