Works of romance depicted love as something that should be extravagant; it showed love as something it was not– pure infatuation. Something that you devoted your entire time to only for it to last a short while until it inevitably ended and you pour your feelings into another person. Love was shown as flashy in fiction, but none of the authors or writers of cheesy rom-coms truely portrayed love with absolute realism.
Love is tough. It has to be nurtured, to be worked on every day to keep the bond strong. The so-called honeymoon phase wasn't a real thing... it again, is just obsession. Love shouldn't be showy, and it took you a long time to realize that.
You were described as a hopeless romantic in your high school years. You constantly chased after guys hoping to get a taste on what you thought love was; the flashiness, the bold movements, the intense yet intimate experiences. It wasn't until you met your now fiance that you truly realized how love was supposed to be.
-
The sun's rays peeked through your blinds, stirring you awake. Next to you laid a man of many nicknames, his quiet snores filling your shared bedroom. Careful not to wake him, you exited your bed, stretching your arms up to hopefully wake you up a bit more.
I should get breakfast started, you thought while putting on your house slippers that laid beside your bed. Before that, though, you circled your bed to face Childe. You brushed your thumb against his cheek before giving him a quick kiss on the forehead. You left your room to start breakfast for the two of you. You began to brew two shots of espresso for your morning coffees and grabbed your dough-starter from the fridge.
Yesterday, your soon-to-be husband mentioned how a "croissant-sandwich" sounded appetizing, so you began a homemade starter for croissants. Although it was a tedious process, in your heart it was worth it.
Roll out the dough, add a butter layer, fold it over, roll, fold, roll, fold, roll, fold...
Shape, egg wash!
Your croissants were ready to be popped into the oven, so you began the contents of the sandwich; eggs, bacon, tomatoes, and cheese. You pulled out a pan and buttered it up to start the eggs, and you heard your husband enter the kitchen with a loud yawn.
"Good morning, sweetheart," you greeted, turning away briefly from the stove to see him.
"G'morning..." Childe mumbled back groggily, wrapping his arms around your waist from behind and leaning onto you.
"Someone still sleepy?" You cooed, cracking the eggs with one hand and grabbing your seasonings with the other.
Your fiance grumbled a response, still not letting you go. Simple weekend mornings like this were the norm. Of course, you guys would occasionally go out to a cafe for breakfast, but you learned that both of you ended up wanting to stay in more.
Finishing up the scrambled eggs with some cheese, you cast them aside on a plate, albeit a bit restricted because of Childe still holding you, to start frying the bacon.
"Whatcha making for breakfast?" Childe asked, rubbing his eyes with one hand while still holding you with his other arm.
"Well, yesterday you said that you were craving a croissant sandwich, so I stayed up a bit later to start croissant dough."
"You're the best. I can't wait to marry you soon." He leaned over and kissed your cheek.
That's right, you thought. Your wedding date is coming up. The wedding was going to be small, something intimate for only family members and close friends. Simplistic, one might put it.
Since you were a little girl, you used to dream of having an exorbitant wedding; lots of guests, an big venue, expensive dress, an all day ceremony... but since then, your tastes have changed. You were no longer a girl that dreamed of a love like in the movies, but now you dreamed of a realistic love, and that's something that Childe delivered.
With the croissants, bacon, and eggs done, you began cutting up tomatoes and other fruits to pair with your breakfast.
"Childe, would you be a dear and finish up our coffees? Breakfast will be done soon." You asked him, who was now sitting at your apartment's kitchen island. Without a word, he stood up and grabbed the oat milk out the fridge and coffee syrups. (if you prefer iced coffee, me too btw, he puts ice in yours. also oat milk in coffee is suchh a recommendation if you havent tried it. not only does it not hurt your stomach *lactose people rise up* but it also makes it soo much creamier,, barista comments)
As you finished up the sandwiches, you plated them along with the cut up fruits and set them on the island to enjoy. Childe finished up the coffees and set them down next to your plates, and you both dug in. You had to admit, his suggestion was quite tasty.
Afterwards, though, you did not feel like doing the dishes but instead you wanted to spend time with Childe. You both put your plates and such in the sink and migrated towards your couch to put on a movie.
Still in your pajamas, you both settled on the plush couch and put on [your favourite movie]. You snuggled up against him as he gave you a kiss on top of your head. The warmth of his body radiated against yours, bringing you a sense of comfort. This is what love was.
Love portrayed in movies is not like real love. Real love is simplistic. Just listening to your partner, spending quality time together, and fighting for your relationship's end game was love. Childe showed you that simplicity of real love, and you wouldn't trade it for anything.
