"Family is not just blood."

I stared at the room in front of me just as I had all night. Letting my thoughts utterly consume me for then and then only.

When the sun came up, and I'd put on my usual mask of irreverence. I would act as though my brother's betrayal didn't matter. As though centuries of family weren't ruined and tainted with the pain of their choice.

My face was stained with dried tears. I watched as the sunrise finally filtered through the light of the blinds. I let myself be shattered and broken for only a moment longer as sat there on the ground like a pile of emotion before I pushed the pain away into the deep depths of my mind.

I braced my hands on the ground as I stood on stiff legs. I took another breath. And then another until I felt as though I could leave the small sanctuary of the room.

I'd start fresh today. I wouldn't let myself think about them.

I changed my old clothes, getting into something more practical. I got ready quickly, doing my makeup and brushing my hair. I'd keep doing that. I'd keep getting up.

I left my room, immediately needing the warmth of coffee. I walked through the house, everything felt...numb. I walked into the kitchen, noticing there was already coffee in the pot. Someone was awake.

I shrugged it off as I grabbed a mug and walked over to the coffee pot. It was quiet. But it was a full silence. So full I knew someone else was there.

"You're up early." A British voice spoke from behind me.

I sighed as I finished pouring the coffee into the cup before heading to the fridge for creamer. I didn't look behind me. There was no need. "I didn't sleep." I replied monotonously, pouring the creamer in.

Klaus hummed and I finally looked up at him. I watched as he approached, silently grabbing a mug from the cupboard beside me as he poured his own cup of coffee. I thought he was more of a tea guy, guess I was wrong.

I went to the island that stood in the middle of the kitchen, taking my seat as I sipped the warm drink in my hand. I stared down at the counter and listened as Klaus came to stand across from me.

He leaned his elbows on the edge of the table, "Your family—" he said, but I cut him off with a glare.

He quieted and I looked down. "You're the last person who should be giving me advice on the matter." I replied softly, sipping from my coffee.

His gaze was knowing. As if he saw through the fact I was deflecting. "Believe it or not, but I do know what it's like to have your family betray you."
