Chapter 9
Morgan
It was Friday and I was lugging shovels and bags of dirt back and forth between the Key Club’s dump truck and the brand new flower garden we were planting. Karen was talking (loud, as always) about how her brother came home drunk the night before and Rose and I were listening, as were probably the rest of the people in Key Club.
Seth and his friend Wes weren’t there because they had a baseball game. Jacquelyn and Joseph let people juggle Key Club and sports when it was necessary because they knew how tough coaches could be, especially with varsity.
Rose, Karen, and I had been assigned to supplies this time, which was probably one of the worst jobs during an environmental project. We continued lugging supplies from the truck to the garden by the front of the senior center.
“He is twenty-eight, you’d think he’d want to clean his life up a bit! He still lives with his parents for God’s sake! Oh and you want to hear the best part? He thought the blender was the cat! He carried it around the entire night until my parents got home and blew up on him.”
“That sounds funny. Terrible for your brother, but funny,” Rose commented.
“That’s a normal day for the Sanders family,” I told her.
“Really?” She asked.
“Yup,” Karen answered. Then Joseph took out his phone and plugged it into the truck’s radio. He put on today’s hits and a few people started to sing along. He was covered in dirt from head to toe.
“Joseph! How’d you manage to get dirt in your hair?” I asked.
“Someone decided to pour a bag of dirt over my head,” he glared at Jacquelyn who smiled innocently.
“What? You were where I wanted to put my dirt,” she lifted her dirty palms up and shrugged. I loved them together, they were awesome.
“They’re great,” Rose voiced my thoughts. I nodded in agreement as we placed down the new bags of dirt on top of the old ones. Then we grabbed the garbage cans filled with weeds and dead plants so we could dump them into the second truck we had for this purpose.
We continued this pattern for two hours until the entire garden was planted. It looked amazing and smelt amazing too. I couldn’t believe we had done this in just three hours, it looked like day’s worth of work.
Afterwards I drove Karen home because for the first time in a few weeks, I actually had the car to myself. Mallory was at Damien’s and they had his car. We decided during lunch that I’d spend the night over, so we went to go get some of my stuff before the Key Club project. We took turns showering so we could get the dirt off and then we ordered pizza for dinner.
“It’s my turn to pick the movie!” I called from her kitchen where I was pouring Fanta orange soda into a cup.
“Yeah, yeah I know.”
I grabbed my plate and soda and walked into her living room. Karen was flipping through movies on her TV as I walked in and placed my food and drink on her coffee table. She was already covered in a blanket surrounded by pillows with her pizza and soda on the end table.
