"like calls to like"

Katerina walked out of the barn the moment the Suli girl left Kaz sitting alone.

"Jesper fixed your cane."

Upon hearing that, Kaz snapped his head to face the girl that has taken the same place Inej was sitting just a few seconds ago. Katerina took one look at Kaz to note the alarming expression on his face.

"Yes, I know about him." She smiled handing him the cane. "We had a nice conversation."

"Jesper is not a fan talking about... that," Kaz said while taking the offered cane from the girl.

Katerina smirked while shrugging her shoulders.

"I have a way with words." The redhead looked at Kaz. "For some reason, everyone in my presence is compelled to say the truth." Kaz out of everyone knew it was true. Yet the smirk soon disappeared from the girl's face. "However, for some reason, it didn't work with Aleksander." Upon noticing the puzzled expression, Katerina realized Kaz might not even know General's real name. "General Kirigan."

Kaz nodded his head in understanding.

Katerina then glanced behind her where the Suli girl had disappeared, then looked back at Kaz.

"That girl..." Kaz glanced at the redhead to see her motioning somewhere behind her.

"Inej?"

Katerina nodded her head with a smile.

"She has a special place in your heart, doesn't she?" Kaz instantly shook his head.

"No."

"Stop your lying Kaz." The smile from the redhead's face did not disappear. "You care for her."

"I care for all my crows." Kaz was looking into the fire before him, then he looked up to the girl. "Inej is no different." Katerina tried to detect some kind of lies in the boy's words that he felt something more towards the Suli girl though she was quite surprised to note that he claimed the truth. "And besides, I am incapable of loving." Kaz looked up to meet the redhead's eyes. "You of all people should understand that."

Katerina smiled gently remembering the promise.

"The promise." She then let out a small laugh. "We were only children then." She claimed defensively. Kaz raised his head to look at the girl, a gentle look reflected into his eyes.

"Yet we promised our hearts to each other." As soon as the gentle look appeared, it just as abruptly disappeared. His eyes fell to his hands. "You wouldn't want it anyway. Would you be willing to take my broken, traumatized, hunted, black heart that is dripping with all the blood that I have spilled?" Kaz looked up expecting to see a troubled look gracing Katerina's features, yet it shocked him to note the smile on her lips.
