How fucking dare she come here on her son's best friend's wedding day.
Alex was stiff next to me, the arm that was looped around my waist tightening. His hand shook against me, but the one holding the gun was perfectly still. And I suddenly wondered what the hell his mother did. Alex had told me that he had a very rough childhood and that he saw his mother murdered by his father, but he never told me if his mother abused him like his father. He never told me what she said to him in those visits over the past three years to make him shake.
She stepped out into the aisle, and I remind myself that the reason Alex looks so good is that his parents have the faces and bodies of models. His mother looked strikingly like him, just as his father did. Her hair was black and fell around her shoulders perfectly. Her face was sweet and gentle, and the outfit she wore suggested kindness and good things. She was kind of hot. She should have filled the role of Alex's kind, loving mother, not one that made him tremble with fury or fear. I felt the urge to throw him behind me and riddle her with bullets as Alex took a deep, steadying breath.
"Darling put the gun down." She said. I scoffed. Even the way she talked just made me think of all things good and lovely. I hated her so fucking much.
"Get out," Alex glanced over at me as he said the words, squeezing my waist slightly so I would look at him. His face was hard, but his eyes looked a little lost. I nodded at him, nudging his leg with mine to tell him that I was here. His breathing was a little heavy, and I hated that he was having a panic attack because of his fucking mother. She should be helping him out of it, not causing it. Behind us, Aron placed a hand on Alex's shoulder, and Zenna held Aron's other hand, the couple offering their silent support.
"What are you doing here?" He asked, keeping his voice steady but not looking at her. His mom stepped toward us, and I lifted my gun more, despite her still being very far away. I tore my eyes away from Alex's balancing the gun in one hand and placing my free hand on his on my waist.
"Take one more step and I shoot." I threatened. His mom just rolled her eyes, stopping.
"I am here to negotiate. I have no weapons or men. I just want to talk." She said, ignoring me and staring at her son. I glanced at Alex again, squeezing his hand.
"Then step outside, and then we can talk." Alex pointed his gun to the exit and stepped off the altar, letting go of my hand. I cursed under my breath, grabbing his hand again and sending an apologetic back at Aron, Zenna, and the priest, who were all watching the scene with a disgusting fascination. Alex tried to pull his hand out of mine, his face and eyes turning cold as he tried to hide his panic attack from me. I shook my head at him, walking down the aisle toward his mother. Who was hot, by the way. I dropped my gun to my side, and Alex put his in his pocket, reaching for me.
Alex pulled me back until I hit his chest, his arm wrapping around my waist and pressing my back into his body. His mother watched as he dipped his head to my ear, holding my glare the entire time.
"If you don't stay here, my love, your ass will be fucking red as soon as we get out of here." His voice was low, breathy, and a little angry. His hands weren't shaking from fear, but anger. I blushed at his words, but I'm not going to leave him alone in this. "Princess..." He sighed, seeing the defiance in my stance. I grinned at him, still not looking away from his mother. Even if standing by him earned me a punishment, I would not just stand here and watch his mother mentally destroy him.
"I'm not leaving you alone with your hot mother." I shot back at him, smirking as he chuckled, hanging his head. After a second, he lifted his head back up, whispering in my ear again.
"As soon as I and her are out of sight, there is a secret exit in front of the alter that leads to the perimeter of the building. Once you get out there, turn right and there is a window that is cracked open slightly. If she tries to hurt me in any way, you can shoot."
"Sounds like you had this planned out." I breathed.
"Never hurts to take precautions." He kissed the side of my head. "You look fucking perfect, princess. Now go."
I blushed, turning away from him and walking calmly towards the alter. I waited until the pair disappeared behind the wall where Zenna and I had been twenty minutes ago before looking for the door Alex told me about. Aron helped me, and it only took a couple of seconds for me to be out of the building. I found the window Alex told me about easily, and I was able to push it open a bit more. His mother's back was towards the window, and Alex's eyes met mine for a brief second before he looked back at her.
"-foolish. You deserve better." She was saying. I pursed my lips, bracing my gun on the ledge of the window and playing with the ring around my neck.
"I see. You decide to attempt at being a mom thirty years and war too late." His voice was smooth and cool. He was the full, perfect embodiment of a king.
"Son, is this really who you want? I could give you any girl that you want, just come with me." She stepped closer, and I ignore the lodge the words instilled in my heart. "Please." My heart got heavy as Alex stared down at her, hands in his pockets. He looked so perfectly at ease, while the idea of him leaving me had me wanting to shoot his fucking mom.
"She is fucking mine." four words, sixteen letters, five syllables. And the ring in my pocket was ready to come out.
"What do you see in her? If you want sex, I have plenty of girls at my base. Come with me, Alexander, please. I'm your family." Her hands were moving as she talked, and a flash of metal caught my attention. It was gone as soon as I noticed it, but I stared at her hands, trying to figure out what it was.
"The fact you think that I want a common whore is disgusting, and with you involved in human trafficking, I will never consider you my family." He spat out the words, disgusted and disappointed. "You never tried to be my family when I was a kid, and you don't deserve to think I ever loved you. If you say shit about my girl again, I will shoot you and everyone in your precious little gang." Alex's words were angry, and when he was done talking, he met my eyes through the window. My heart was in my throat, my fingers trembling. I've never seen him this angry, or this protective over me. He was downright terrifying right now, but I found it oddly comforting that he would go this far... for me. An insecure, troubled, used assassin.
"I'm sorry, Alexander, let's start over." She begged.
"Don't say my fucking name." He pulled his hands out from his pockets, one of them going to rest on the gun he had in his waistband.
"Son, please. We can be a family again." She stepped closer to him, so close that I was getting uncomfortable. The thing flashed in her hands again, and I focused on the spot. What the hell?
"No. I won't leave her." He said. My heart warmed as I realized that he was talking about me. Tears threatened to spill out of his eyes, and his mom reached her arms out, wrapping him in a hug. He tried to push her off, but she attached to him like a leech. He sighed, rolling his eyes and meeting mine through the window.
"I could give you anyone else, son, just let me be your mother again." She said. Alex just stood there, stiff as she hugged him.
"In your fucking nightmares." I couldn't see her face, but I could see the flash of metal. This time, it didn't disappear.
And that's when I realized.
It was a knife.
And she was about to stab Alex with it.
The window shattered and I felt glass cat my face, but I didn't care.
Time seemed to slow down as the knife drove toward's Alex's heart.
"No!"
A/N.
Omg, I looove cliffhangers! Anyways, sorry the past two chapters have been shorter. Can someone pretty please come up with a blub for this book? You can DM it to me. I just really want this book to work out well, and with the blurb I have right now it won't. you can DM anything to me really, like art or ideas for the books I'm doing, IDC really, you can even DM me for advice or shit. Lol. Love you guys
I may or may not be starting a new book as soon as I am done editing this one. If I were to start this new book, I would write it at the same time I edit my other book, Her Gaurd. (Might change the title on that one, give me ideas.) So, updates would be pretty slow on both. You should read Her Gaurd once it's up, and you should definitely read the new book I may or may not be writing.
You guys are amazing! <3
