There was the tree. Right there, under the coolness of her hand.
There he was. Hiding from her, always hiding.
"Ashley," he said slyly. She giggled and ducked from site.
Maybe it had been her all along, the one who was hiding, always hiding.
There was a low hanging branch. Ashley saw an oppurtunity and leaped upwards to perch easily onto the branch.
"Ashley?"
The snow girl watched in amusement as her friend circled the base of the tree. She pulled her hand up to her face and secured it across her mouth, even though he would have been able to sense her from across the field.
"Ashley," he said and more desperately this time. She could here the tears in his voice. Was it because he couldn't find her? Surely not.
"Ashley."
The snow girl got ready to jump down, scare him and then call him a baby. Her soles left the safety of the branch, but she didn't land on the ground.
Her head did instead. She screamed out, but instead of sound, water filled her mouth and bubbles cascaded upwards into her nose and into her head. Her feet were stuck and she panicked; she couldn't get out.
"Ashley!" the cries were becoming frantic. She wanted to call out, she really did but the water that was bursting her lungs and squeezing her throat disallowed it.
She burst out of the water with a loud gasp. She choked and the water made slushing sounds as it fell into her eyes and mouth. Ashley tried to scream, really did, but her lungs were water logged and her head hurt from where she had hit against the rocks of the ravine. She could smell blood. Hers. A sharp object pressed into her stomach, pushed and then slid right through her as the water swept her along. The snow girl frantically grabbed, pulled, held anything that she possibly could.
"Ashley." Danny knew where she'd be; he smelt her scent. He was shocked when he came across a distraught looking Mia. "Mia," he ordered. On his secreted command, Mia didn't turn around. She stared at the arcane water, on her hands and knees. Ashley hadn't come back up.
The fire boy narrowed his eyes and walked towards her, sensing something was wrong. Ashley had been here, there was even a bloody stain on the tree that Danny's incredible senses had detected.
"What's wrong Mia? Where's Ashley?" he was hurried by the sounds of screams. The battle was still in full swing but how could he let his mate get hurt, he could feel her almost as prominently as his own battle scars. His head still ached from where she had hit hers.
A cruel feeling crept up his spine, the one he felt when he wanted to change. His wolf wanted his impossible, cursed mate.
Danny was above her now. He placed a hand onto her shoulder, a comforting gesture, but she flinched. Hissing she pulled down her sleeve to reveal a scorch mark. She shot wild dangerous eyes at him; he was one of them too.
The fire boy was speechless, he had not meant to do that. Was this what Ashley had dealt with all that time? Why she never wanted to get to close to any of us and then rebelling when she did? "Where's my mate?" using his Alpha tone and new found power to manipulate her.
She sniffled and wiped her eyes. "I'm sorry Danny," she said getting up. She had mourned her friend and now she was ready to find Lawson... her friends murderer. It always supposed to be this way, she told herself, it was your fault, not his for getting too close to her.
