Years Ago

Mia met Ashley and her friend Danny at their usual table about five minutes before school began and already she could see that they were deep in conversation. Danny looked amused, whereas, Ashley, as usual looked more stubborn.

"What's the story today then?" Mia asked. Danny had stiffened at her voice, having not yet entirely warmed up to her. While Ashley smiled. "Danny recons that I should lighten up-" Mia interupted, "I totally agree with-" she stopped after the silencing look that Ashley gave her.

"About," the snow girl continued, "the fact that I do not like the girls here; all they do is whisper about us behind our backs. Stpuid humans!" she finished. Danny rolled his eyes. "No, I understand her perfectly-"

"Of course you do," Danny sneered. Mia stared at him spitefully but nevertheless, continued her speech. "Because, it is obvious that we are prettier than anybody here; it's in our blood. So it is hard not to get mad with the snobby girls that are just jealous when they talk behind their hands which we can hear, because of our genes!" Mia took a big breath as she looked at Ashley for confirmation. She just nodded shyly.

That was why Danny did not like Mia: she was too obnoxious for her own good.

The bell rang and Mia grabbed Ashleys hand, who in turn pulled up Danny. The three of them walked into the school.

And that is when it began again, everybody staring at the three hottest kids in school (although Ashley would never believe that,) and whispering to their friends. Ashley growled at one of the comments made by a tall blonde girl with way too much lip gloss on. Danny squeezed her hand and whispered to her as they reached hers and Mia's classroom, "just ignore them."

Ashley nodded but still looked at the group of girls. "Hey!" Danny said, pulling her face to meet his, using his thumb. "Ash, if it gets too much I can always have a word." He smiled his trademark smile. "Ok," she whispered, half to herself.

Mia kind of stood like a third wheel beside them, to make it less awkward, she read off a poster outside the science room about contreception, and shuddered.

"Don't go crying on me Ash," the fire boy smirked. She narrowed her eyes suggetively, "don't bet on it." Danny pouted and as she laughed, Ashley squeezed his cheeks before pushing him backward. He deflected the move quickly and walked away to find his classroom, chuckling and shaking his head.

After Ashley was done watching him disapear around the corner, she turned back to her other friend. "Flirt," she accused. Ashley shook her head instantaneously. Mia just laughed.

"-I know, what a- she doesn't deserve him- I mean who even is she? I don't think she talks- as for her friend, what is up with her- Maybe they're together- but they never kiss- hold hands?- yeah- Ashley is such a-" Thats the string of comments made by the nearby group, and that was when Mia payed a visit. "I dare you to finish that sentence!"

The whole corridor went silent as they waited outside the classroom. Why did she do this? Ashley sighed, she knows I hate a scene!

A red headed girl decided to step forward. She wore a pair of strappy ankle boots with skyscraper heels and skirt so short that it worked better as a very wide belt. Her eyelashes were so thick in several coats of mascara that it looked as though she had a family of tarantulas stuck onto her eyelids. Her barely there eyebrows raised mockingly and her hands crossed over her chest. "Fine, I was just telling my friends here, that Ashley is such a slut." Ashleys eyes widened at the insult and Mia on seeing her best mates reaction, slapped the girl hard in the face. She was aiming for a good punch to the nose, but knowing her strength it might have killed the girl.

"Ashley is a better person than you will ever be," Mia said. "Maybe, but Danny still deserves better than an ugly mute," she spat. That time Mia didn't care who got hurt as she lunged at the girl, talons out.

The girl came back with a fist and Mia easily deflected it, after that the whole group of girls backed up their friend and they boys chanted "fight," and well, how could Ashley not help her friend?

It ended up with three girls having a finger or two broken, the red head had her nose broke by an elbow in the face at Ashley's expense. Ashley had a fistfull of her hair ripped out and she pushed down the girl, punching her until she had a black eye and an ugly looking face - not that it was that great to begin with.

All girls had their parents called and the mothers of the girls glared at the pair as they collected their snivelling children. Once all the girls had left, Mia burst out laughing and Ashley soon followed. Mia slung an arm around Ashley's shoulders and said, "I got your back."

That was when their parents appeared in the office and a severly angry Alpha.

"Girls, I do not understand why you did this. You know how important it is to protect our secret and two thirteen year old girls beating up seven girls does not keep it under lock and key does it!" the Alpha demanded. They were in his office, their parents summoned to leave and Danny secretly waiting outside.

After a while, Alpha dismissed them, but before Ashley could get out the door the alpha said, "jealousy is an ugly virtue Ashley, remember who you are." She just nodded, not quite understanding.

Mia excused herself on the way back home as Danny turned up. "Bye," she'd waved and Danny completely ignored her.

"What the hell Ash?" he demanded, "I thought we spoke about this."

Ashley carried on walking after shouting, "seeya," to Mia.

"Ashley," Danny growled, keeping a steady pace with her. "I didn't start it Danny!" she told him firmly, "I did what you said, I wasn't going to get involved!"

"Then why did you?" he asked quietly. Tears threatened to show as Ashley remembered what they had said to her. "I don't need to deserve you!" she muttered to herself and picked up speed, although she didn't head home. "You're my best friend, nothing more!"

Danny tried to keep up with her, but trying to work out what she was saying was taking up half of his time.

She'd climbed the first branch by the time Danny reached her at the tree.

The snow girl flinched as she felt him behind her as though she'd almost forgotten he was there. "Ash," he said gently, "what did they say to you?"

Ashley gulped and shook her head.

Danny pulled her closer to him and sat down, so that she was sat on his lap on the branch. "They said that I- that I wasn't good enough, that I didn't deserve you. They said I was ugly and a- a mute, they called me a slut!"

Danny shook his head angrily. "Ashley you are not ugly!" he told her, she knew that he meant it. She still believe him. "And as for the mute thing, well, they do not know you at all!" he joked, "god I wish you were!" She laughed through the tears and pushed herself back into him for comfort.

She noted that he didn't say a word about the 'slut' part.

"They don't know anything." Danny murmered to himself.
