The Risk

I drove to my aunt's house expecting to see Hunter. I parked the car and didn't see Hunter's truck parked there. I walked inside and went outback. The cabin sat there in all its glory. He couldn't have been done because he still had to paint it. If Hunter was gone then what was I to do. I opened the cabin and saw that it was amazing. It was painted a beautiful shade of light pink and blue. Everything was placed neatly and evenly throughout the cabin. I walked up the steps and saw the bedroom and bathroom. My daughter would love staying here just like I used to before it got too dangerous for me to be in. "I thought I saw your car," Hunter said. I jumped back startled. "I didn't hear you come in," I said.

"I think you were thinking." He said.

"Looks good," I said.

"It's gorgeous." He said.

"I meant the cabin," I said.

"So did I." He said.

"I knew that," I said.

"You're gorgeous too." He said.

"Hunter," I said. My cheeks flushing and turning a bright red. I knew I looked as red as a tomato right now. "Relax Emma. I know you're engaged." He said. "Then stop," I said.

"It was just a compliment." He said.

"I have something to tell you," I said.

"I do too." He said.

"You go first," I said.

"Today's my last day." He said.

"What!" I said.

"All I have to do is paint the bedroom." He said. "What about outside," I said.

"It's a cabin. It's supposed to be like that." He said.

"I thought you'd be here a little longer," I said.

"Sorry to disappoint." He said.

"I like you," I said.

"I know that. We couldn't be friends if we hated each other." He said.

"More than a friend,"  I said.

"I can't do this." He said.

"I know it's a risk," I said.

"I'm not putting my daughter through this." He said.

"I don't want to put my daughter in this either, Hunter," I said. I took a step towards him as he took one back. "I'm just here to finish my work. Then I'm leaving. You belong with Adam, not me." He said.

"How do you know?" I asked.

"Listen Emma. Before I came along you and Adam were great together." He said. "Me and Adam weren't speaking," I said.

"You love him." He said.

"Yes I do, but there is a difference between loving someone and being in love with someone," I said.

"You should go. The smell gets strong fast." He said.

"When you stop lying to yourself about how you feel call me," I said.

"Don't hold your breath." He said.

"Don't worry. I won't." I said leaving the cabin. That went worse than expected, but better than him freaking out to the point where he'd had a heart attack. We both knew of the risk with our children and our hearts. The only difference is that I was ready to take that risk if it meant eternal happiness.
